Is Jimmy Smith a Hall of Famer?

Just heard he retired today from the Jags after 11 seasons in the league.. He has more receptions and yards I believe then anyone currently in the Hall, but times have changed and Smith played in a league with a bunch of great receivers..

Still, he is underappreciated IMO and was a really good football player. Do I think he deserves the Hall? Close.. but yes. I think he should get in.

It probably is pretty close, but I'd say no.

He's compiled pretty solid numbers, but I just can't get past the fact that he was never really a dominant receiver or anything. I mean, has he ever been a top-5 receiver in the NFL? Probably not.

I just heard a stat that he has more receptins since 1996 then any receiver in the league or something to that effect.. I can't quite remember..

Here's some notes on Smith..

Currently Smith's 862 receptions ranks seventh in NFL history, and his 12,287 yards ranks 11th all time. He had seven straight 1,000 yard seasons which ranks third behind Jerry Rice and Tim Brown. Smith had been voted to the Pro Bowl five straight times from 1997 to 2001.

The NFL is a pretty picky Hall, so I would say no. Look at Michael Irvin.

Bltiz, the stat you might have heard is that he has more career receptions than any player currently in the HOF.

Still, I agree with DMW. Irvin and Art Monk are still in front of him in line.

I agree.

He is a very solid player, but not everybody can get in.

Yeah, the NFL has VERY high standards when it comes to the HOF. I think he will fall short, even though he was a very solid receiver for many years

And I tihnk that with Irvin, Rice, and Tim Brown getting in in the next few years, it will be tough for Smith to get through
