The New York Yankees swooped in Tuesday and nabbed prized free agent Mark Teixeira, reaching agreement with the first baseman on an eight-year contract worth $180 million, three sources involved in the negotiations tell ESPN The Magazine's Buster Olney.
The Yankees had made an offer to Teixeira weeks ago, but then withdrew it. Their intention all along was to make a deal if it fell within parameters acceptable to the organization. They made their formal offer Tuesday.
The contract will pay Teixeira an average of $22.5 million per season.
The Yankees had $88.5 million coming off the books that, even with the Teixeira contract, they expect their payroll to fall below $200 million. New York has committed $423.5 million in salary in the last month, with $161 million going to left-handed pitcher CC Sabathia ($23 million over seven years) and $82.5 million on right-hander A.J. Burnett ($185 million over five).
Likely Yankee lineup
What the Yankees' lineup could look like when they open the season on April 6 in Baltimore:
LF Johnny Damon
SS Derek Jeter
1B Mark Teixeira
3B Alex Rodriguez
DH Hideki Matsui
RF Xavier Nady
C Jorge Posada
2B Robinson Cano
CF Melky Cabrera
Bench? -- Nick Swisher
Agreeing to a deal with Teixeira virtually eliminates any chance that free-agent outfielder Manny Ramirez has a landing place with the Yankees. New York does have money left to add another starting pitcher, most likely veteran left-hander Andy Pettitte at $10 million if he agrees to terms soon.
Teixeira's salary gives the Yankees, who are preparing to move into their pricey new ballpark in 2009, the four highest-paid players in Major League Baseball, including third baseman Alex Rodriguez, shortstop Derek Jeter and Sabathia.
The Yankees landed the 28-year-old Teixeira at a time it was believed the Boston Red Sox or the Washington Nationals were the likeliest to be his future employer. The Red Sox's offer was believed to be in the range of $170 million, and the Nationals reached out with an offer perhaps greater than that of Boston.
Teixeira finished last season with the Los Angeles Angels following a trade from Atlanta. The Angels withdrew from negotiations on Sunday night, in a very public manner, and say they were moving on to other players.
Because Teixeira grew up in the Baltimore area, the Orioles had long been viewed as a possible landing spot for him. But since the O's made a seven-year, $140 million offer, they did not revise it -- nor have they had active negotiations with his agent, Scott Boras, according to sources.
Teixeira's negotiations with the Red Sox appeared to stall last week in the failed meeting between the team executives and the player. The Nationals reportedly made an offer of eight years and $160 million.
The first baseman, who batted .308 with 33 home runs, 121 RBIs and a .552 slugging percentage for the Angels and Braves last season, had made it clear that he wanted to make a decision on where to play next season and beyond by Christmas.

The Yanks seem to do this a lot, but I truly feel like this could be their year to shine. The players they've picked up are really big names and if they put up the same stats they did last year, it's going to be impossible to stop the Dankies.
Unfortunately, Yanks = World Series Champs in '09.

lol you gotta be shitting me, the Yankees have spent over $420 million on two unproven players. Dont get me wrong, they look good and all, but CC is like 400 lbs, they paid him damn near 100k per pound. Teixeira had a break out season, but he is far overpaid. The Yankees are killing baseball in my opinion.
Overpaid? and Over Rated Nexus? You can focus all you want on CC's Weight but when you look at the sheer facts.... He was a CY Award winner in 2007, Had 10 complete games last year and put Milwaukee on his back to try and make the playoffs last year and had a .270 ERA also, what you are forgetting in all of this is that this deal itself gets the Yankees exactly even with the same payroll they had last year with the contracts of letting Giambi, Abrue and Pavano go so don't even give me that B.S. you Blue Jay Fan. Mark Teixeria; Gold Glove winner at 1st base in 2005 & 2004 along with silver slugger awards as well. I mean come on, if you want to say how bad they are then at least admit that they are playing inside the rules. As Miz and Morrison would say, Be Jealous.

I have to agree with Nexus on this one. Teixeira is definitely overpaid. No one is worth 180 mill for 8 years. I felt that way even if he was to sign with us. Long term deals are a little risky, especially with injuries and aging players. Yes, Mark is only 28, but still. CC is also overpaid too. Yes CC is a dominant pitcher, and I love him as well as a Pitcher, but again, overpaid. Same with A-Rod. How the Yankees can spend all this money, I have know idea. But as they say, the Yankees are the best team in Baseball Money Can buy. I hope they tank this year. But when you have A-Rod, Teixeira, and Hideki Matsui as the middle of your lineup, you are going to have some great hitting there.
I am making a bold statement, and you are all reading it right here.
Yankees are not going to win the World Series this year, guarantee it.

Im not a baseball fan to be honest. But look at it this way, CC is 400lbs now, and he shows no signs of wanting to lose weight. Yankees just gave him over 100 million dollars worth of food. How long into his contract do you think it will be before he runs into health problems. It wouldnt surprise me if the sucker took a stroke on the mound. So yes I will make an issue of his weight because it will cause him major health problems during the course of his contract, and lets not forget that almost everyone who has made over 100 million has been a bust. The closest thing to a non bust was A Rod, and he fell off the map in the playoffs. For picthers, one only has to look at Barry Zito.
Yankees are not going to win the World Series this year, guarantee it.
My Sox are way too good for the Yanks to even win that division. Rays hav potential too, so I myself don't even think the Yanks will make the playoffs. Every big signing they get, thm players turns into a bust. Same shits going to happen to Teixiera, Burnett and everyone else they signed. The only one that might be good this year and won't be a bust is Teixeira
