Thats an interesting question considering all the ridiculous politics that are behind the BCS, they wouldn't change their current system for a while. However IF...
Its easy. Take the top 8 teams like the elite 8 from the NCCA basketball system and then have a playoff. You can even keep the crappy way they determine the top 8 with a computer, coaches, and the media voting. However you've got 8 teams who all have a shot at being a proven national title contender. That gives teams like Utah and Boise State a chance to prove their worth. Not to mention we would get a slur of potentially amazing games all leading up to the final game in which 2 teams EARNED their shot to the game as opposed to being voted in. Its absolutely true and its been proven the past 3 years that any team can beat any team on any given Saturday. It all comes down to who wants it more and with a playoff system we'd really see what its all about.

Thanks, Longhorn. I'd agree with your system for the most part. The only detail I'd add is that the Quarter-Final match-ups in my Playoff system would be the four major Bowl games: Sugar, Rose, Orange, and Fiesta.
Semi-Final #1: Sugar Bowl Champions v. Orange Bowl Champions
Semi-Final #2: Rose Bowl Champions v. Fiesta Bowl Champions
The National Championship Game: Semi-Final #1 Winners v. Semi-Final #2 Winners
And if for some reason, there were 4 undefeated teams, I'd have a three-game playoff with the winner earning the #8 seed. (My reasoning is because schools like Utah, Boise States, and others usually are considered longshots and wildcards.)
We had a thread like this last year. I don't really feel like typing out my proposal again, so I'll give the gist of it. 16 team playoff, conference winners get auto-bids, 8 at large teams selected. ranked 1-16 like BCS or whatever. Once they're eliminated from the playoff they may run off to their respective bowl games.
I think it's hilarious that Utah's considered a longshot when they've one of the toughest SOS's for the year btw.
