Melvin Mora
Orioles
Contract talks stalled
Apr 3 - Melvin Mora still hasn't gotten the deal he wants, and his temper is growing, the Washington Post reports. "I want to let the fans know that I want to stay here," Mora told the newspaper. "I don't want to run away and be greedy. I'm not frustrated, but when you've done some good things for the club, you just want an answer -- whether good or bad."
Mora has backed down from his initial proposal of three years for $30 million and is now seeking three years at $27 million. But the Orioles have not budged from their three-year, $24 million offer. Mora will not accept anything less than $9 million per year unless the O's add another year. "I came down," Mora said of his demands. "They haven't come up."

Junior Spivey
Cardinals
The movable piece
Apr 3 - After a terrible spring, Junior Spivey did not make the Cardinals' Opening Day roster, leaving the club with a couple of options, the St. Louis Post-Dispatch. The most drastic and least likely move is releasing Spivey, who was signed to a $1.2 million, one-year contract in December. The most likely alternative is designating him to the minors and hoping he regains his game there. "I'm doing everything I can. I care. I'm working at it," Spivey told the newspaper. "Not a day has gone by that I haven't thought about it. Nobody has higher expectations for me than I do. ... It's hard to pinpoint. The bottom line is it hasn't been there. There's no reason to make excuses, and I'm not going to sit here and do it."

Chicago
Sixth sense
Apr 3 - White Sox starters Jose Contreras, Freddy Garcia, Jon Garland, Mark Buehrle and Javier Vazquez are all under contract through at least 2007 -- but Brandon McCarthy is still waiting patiently in the wings, the Chicago Sun-Times reports.
"While I don't think there can be an excess of pitching, I do realize that before the start of the '07 season, with all things staying the same, we're going to have to find a spot for Brandon," GM Ken Williams told the newspaper. "Where or how that shapes up, I don't know." Williams has no plans to break up the six this season. "I've had calls [about our starters] from other teams since last October," Williams said. "They haven't stopped. My response is, 'I like what we have, thank you very much.' "

Derrek Lee
Cubs
New deal?
Apr 3 - According to the Chicago Sun-Times, Derrek Lee and the Cubs are closing in on a contract extension agreement. "From what I'm hearing, it sounds like we are getting close," Lee told the newspaper. "They are just trying to sort things through."
If negotiations between general manager Jim Hendry and Lee's agent, Casey Close, hit a last-minute snag, Lee won't let talks go too long without a resolution. He doesn't want to be distracted during the season. "If there is a gap and things aren't working out, I'm not going to continue to go back-and-forth," Lee said. "But if we have to finish it up, it's OK to go a little bit. If it starts dragging, you put it off until after the season."

David Dellucci
Phillies
Phillies?
Angels?
Left-handed value
Apr 3 - Phillies GM Pat Gillick insisted that acquiring outfielder David Dellucci from the Rangers was not a precursor to a bigger trade, the Philadelphia Inquirer reports.
The chance to add outfield depth and a left-handed bat off the bench was what led Gillick to trade pitcher Robinson Tejeda and minor-league outfielder Jake Blalock for Dellucci and an undisclosed amount of cash. "The only thing I would say is that Pat [Burrell] at times has a little problem with his foot and we don't want to be caught shorthanded," Gillick said. "If he says he needs a day off, we want to have somebody we could put there."

Brandon Phillips
Indians
Indians dealing Phillips
Mar 31 - It's only a matter of time, a few days perhaps, before the Indians trade infielder Brandon Phillips, The Cleveland Plain Dealer reports.
"We're already working with teams and exchanging names," Indians GM Mark Shapiro told the newspaper. If a deal is in place, Shapiro reportedly will announce it Saturday after the Indians' last spring game. If a deal isn't in place, Phillips will be designated for assignment, giving the Indians 10 days to trade him.

Juan Pierre
Cubs
Wait-and-see approach to Pierre
Mar 29 - The Cubs appear willing to let Juan Pierre play out the final year of his contract, The Chicago Tribune reports. "The leadoff hitter market is a little hard to get your handle on right now," GM Jim Hendry told The Tribune. "It changed a lot with one signing over the winter. It affected arbitration numbers a little bit. Both sides have to feel out where those future financial numbers settle."

Angels check out Durazo
Mar 29 - In the market for a left-handed bat, the Angels this week took a quick look at Erubiel Durazo, the Orange County Register reports. Durazo, who was released Monday by the Rangers, had Tommy John surgery 10 months ago.

Yan to Baltimore?
Mar 29 - The Angels have offered Esteban Yan to Baltimore for David Newhan, but the Orioles don't want to take on Yan's $1.25 million salary given the reliever's erratic results, the Orange County Register reports.

Florida
Outfield help: Part time or full time?
Mar 23 - The Marlins may consider trading a pitching prospect for an inexpensive young outfielder, The Miami Herald reports. "Is it fair to say we would like to improve our outfield depth? Yes," GM Larry Beinfest told The Herald. "Is it starting outfield depth? I don't know; that's [something] we can't answer right now."

Gathright staying put?
Mar 21 - The Devil Rays aren't as likely to part with speedy outfielder Joey Gathright as they were last month, The Palm Beach Post reports. The Marlins were interested in trading pitcher Scott Olsen to acquire Gathright, but the Devil Rays reportedly have been unimpressed with Olsen this spring.
