Gibbs retires as coach, president of Redskins

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Associated Press

ASHBURN, Va. -- After the toughest season of his Hall of Fame career, one that tested his leadership like never before, Joe Gibbs is stepping down.

He retired as coach and team president of the Washington Redskins on Tuesday, three days after a playoff loss ended an inspirational late-season run that followed the death of safety Sean Taylor.

Gibbs will remain as a special adviser to owner Dan Snyder and was to discuss his retirement at an afternoon news conference at Redskins Park. The news startled players, who left Sunday's final team meeting certain their 67-year-old coach would return for the final year of his contract.

"That's part of this business -- it's full of surprises," safety Pierson Prioleau said. "Most of us suspected he would be back, and he'll definitely be missed."

Among the candidates to replace Gibbs will be two former head coaches on his staff, Gregg Williams and Al Saunders. Former Pittsburgh coach Bill Cowher also could be a candidate. The team will have to interview at least one minority to comply with the NFL's "Rooney Rule" as it seeks the sixth coach since Snyder bought the team in 1999.

Some players on Tuesday immediately endorsed Williams, the fiery coach Gibbs hired to run the defense in 2004. Williams was 17-31 as head coach of the Buffalo Bills from 2001-03 but has put together solid defenses in three of his four seasons in Washington. Williams' in-your-face style would be a marked contrast to Gibbs' more measured approach.

"Coach Williams is a great coach," fullback Mike Sellers said. "The players love him. It would be sad to see him not get it."

After speaking to a Redskins official Tuesday morning, ESPN's Chris Mortensen said that contrary to earlier media reports, Williams does not have a clause in his contract that would pay him a bonus if he isn't named head coach.

Gibbs went 31-36, including 1-2 in the playoffs, after emerging from NFL retirement and his NASCAR career to sign a five-year, $27.5 million contract in 2004. He had always maintained he intended to fulfill the contract, but the 67-year-old coach wavered from that stance Monday when asked if he would return for the final year of his deal.

Gibbs' retirement brings an apparent end to a coaching career in which he twice raised the Redskins from mediocrity into a playoff team, although he failed in his goal of bringing the team back to the Super Bowl during his second stint in Washington. Gibbs won three NFL titles during his first stint from 1981-92; the second time he took the team to the postseason in two of his four seasons.

His decision to leave follows perhaps the best coaching performance of his career. After the death of Taylor on Nov. 27, the Redskins lost a game to Buffalo in which Gibbs was flagged for a vital 15-yard penalty for trying to call back-to-back timeouts in the final moments. Gibbs said he wasn't aware of the rule, giving more fodder to the argument that his game management skills had waned.

"I just recall after the Buffalo game him saying that he made a bad call and that he didn't know if the game was for him anymore," kick returner Rock Cartwright said. "And [quarterback] Mark Brunell stood up and told him that we win together and lose together so don't put that on yourself. That could have been a sign right there."

But, following Taylor's funeral, Gibbs and his team rallied to win the final four regular-season games, going from 5-7 to 9-7 to claim the final playoff berth in the NFC. The emotional run ended Saturday, when the Redskins lost 35-14 at Seattle in the wild-card playoffs.

"It was the toughest [season] for me," Gibbs said Monday. "When you go through a season like that, for a while it's kind of hard to regrasp reality."

Gibbs has also endured a personal crisis for a year. One of his grandsons, Taylor, was diagnosed with leukemia last January at age 2. Gibbs frequently talks lovingly about his "grandbabies," and he made an overnight trip to North Carolina on Sunday to be with his family, interrupting the postseason routine of meetings that usually follow the final game of the season.

Still, for much of the season, Gibbs seemed intent on returning to coach. Players and coaches said publicly and privately over the last week that they would be shocked if he didn't stay on to finish the job. Last month, he said he would be open to discussing a contract extension so that he would not return next season as a lame-duck coach.

Joe Gibbs won three NFL titles during his first stint with the Redskins. The second time around he took Washington to the playoffs in two of his four seasons.

At a news conference Monday, Gibbs spoke about plans for next season -- the team's approach to free agency, offseason workouts and the possibility of an open quarterback competition at training camp -- as if he were going to remain on the sidelines. However, he hedged when asked if he would definitely be back, saying it would hinge on his meeting Monday night with Snyder.

"Everybody's situation will be taken into context here -- including mine, and my future here and all that," Gibbs said Monday.

Gibbs went 124-60 during the regular season and 16-5 during the playoffs during his first term with the Redskins. He won Super Bowls following the 1981, 1987 and 1991 seasons with three different quarterbacks.

Having said repeatedly that he did not intend to coach again, Gibbs was inducted in the Hall of Fame in 1996. Snyder lured him out of retirement four years ago to rescue a franchise that had floundered for more than a decade, having made only one playoff appearance since Gibbs' first retirement.

Gibbs' last four years were down-and-up, down-and-up. He had his two worst seasons as a coach -- 6-10 in 2004 and 5-11 in 2006 -- but he also led the Redskins to the playoffs with late runs in 2005 and 2007.

"There's not enough words to say what he's done for the organization," Cartwright said. "Especially this year. We had a tough year, he pulled it all together and brought us closer as a family."

His final career totals: 171-101, including 17-7 in the playoffs, a career .629 winning percentage that ranks third all-time behind George Halas and Don Shula among coaches with more than 125 wins.

I figured he would whether he went to and won the Super Bowl. At least he goes out taking his team back to the playoffs.

Hes staying on as an advisor...not sure if that means he will be in charge of personnel, or if he was pushed out the door and given a title so he can still pull down a salary. He did an awesome job though, lets face it, that team wasnt doing that great. Than the Taylor thing happened, and he pulled them together and got them to the playoffs, with a backup QB.

Falcons might offer head coaching job to Carroll

ATLANTA -- Having so far limited their search to current NFL assistants, the Atlanta Falcons may be about to move outside the box and significantly raise the profile of candidates for their head coaching vacancy.

Pete Carroll has been rumored for many head coaching vacancies in the NFL in recent years.

Multiple sources told ESPN.com late Tuesday night that the Falcons are pursuing Pete Carroll for an interview. If Carroll agrees, and the logistics can be arranged, the Southern California coach could huddle with Atlanta owner Arthur Blank by the weekend. Carroll, who has previously been a head coach in the NFL with the New York Jets and New England Patriots, would certainly become the biggest name on the list of Atlanta candidates.

Carroll, 56, recently completed his seventh season at Southern California with a resounding victory over Illinois in the Rose Bowl. He has led the Trojans to two national championships and compiled a 76-14 record. The 14 defeats have been by an average of just 4.1 points.

Southern California was 11-2 this season and many observers felt that, had it not been for injuries, the Trojans might have vied for the national title. Carroll's .844 winning mark at Southern California is the best in the nation among active coaches with at least five seasons of experience.

Over the past few seasons, there has been rampant speculation that Carroll might be lured back to the NFL, but he has rebuffed all overtures to return to the pro game. Conventional wisdom is that Carroll would only consider an NFL job if he had full control over the football operation. That likely would not be the case in Atlanta, where Blank is seeking a new general manager as well as a head coach.

But sources said the Falcons might be willing to grant Carroll far-reaching responsibilities and that the USC coach, who could assemble a very strong staff, could be intrigued by the challenge of resurrecting a franchise that has been through a turbulent year and has become all but irrelevant on the Atlanta sports scene.

In his first NFL head coaching stint, Carroll lasted just one season with the Jets, taking the team to a 6-10 record in 1994. He coached the Patriots for three seasons, 1997-99, and was 28-23, with one division title and two playoff berths.

The Falcons suffered a bad experience this season with a coach hired from the college ranks, when Bobby Petrino, formerly of Louisville, resigned with three games remaining to fill the Arkansas vacancy. But unlike Petrino, who had been an NFL assistant for three seasons, Carroll has prior head coaching experience in the league and was an assistant coach and defensive coordinator for 12 years as well.

On Tuesday, the Falcons continued their simultaneous searches for a general manager and head coach.

Franchise officials interviewed two more general manager candidates, New York Giants vice president of player evaluation Chris Mara and Jacksonville Jaguars director of college scouting Gene Smith, in Atlanta on Tuesday. That raised to five the number of men with whom the Falcons have met about their GM job.

The Falcons on Monday interviewed Philadelphia Eagles general manager Tom Heckert for the same position, and there is a strong sense in league circles that the veteran talent scout is the front-runner for the job. Heckert, 40, has been highly recommended by Eagles owner Jeff Lurie.

Last week, Blank and team president Rich McKay interviewed a pair of Green Bay scouting officials, director of pro personnel Reggie McKenzie and personnel analyst John Schneider, for the general manager position. The two were set to meet with Indianapolis vice president of football operations Chris Polian last Thursday about the GM job, but he opted to remove himself from consideration.

The general manager vacancy was created when Blank three weeks ago announced that McKay would lose oversight of the personnel department. McKay last week agreed to a two-year contract extension, through 2010, to remain on board as the team president.

On the head coaching front, the Falcons sought and received permission to interview Tennessee Titans defensive coordinator Jim Schwartz. One of the league's brightest assistants, and a runner-up for the San Francisco 49ers head coach spot a few years ago, Schwartz is expected to meet with the Falcons later this week.

The Falcons also sought permission to interview Giants defensive coordinator Steve Spagnuolo, who is in his first season in that capacity. Despite reports that New York officials denied permission for a meeting with Spagnuolo, that is not entirely the case. The Giants, who are in the playoffs and preparing for a division-round matchup against Dallas on Sunday, only asked that the Falcons delay an interview until their season is over.

Spagnuolo is a former Philadelphia linebackers coach and worked with Heckert while with the Eagles' organization.

The Falcons have interviewed four head coach candidates: Dallas assistant head coach Tony Sparano, Cowboys offensive coordinator Jason Garrett, Indianapolis assistant head coach Jim Caldwell, and former Baltimore defensive coordinator Rex Ryan.

Is Atlanta frigging stupid? It s becoming obvious that college coaches arent taking to well to the pros. They got burned by Petrino, now they want to try and get Carroll out of his perfect situation in USC?

If he seriously takes it, he'll be another college coach who failed in the NFL. Carrol is a college genius, but I don't think he'd have the same luck in the NFL.

Exactly, not to mention the Falcons are a struggling franchise the way it is.

USC coach Pete Carroll is interested in the Atlanta Falcons' head coach opening and is expected to speak with Atlanta owner Arthur Blank via phone Wednesday, sources at the American Football Coaches Convention in Anaheim told ESPN's Joe Schad.

Pete Carroll has been rumored for many head coaching vacancies in the NFL in recent years.

Blank is expected to offer full control of personnel decisions to Carroll and the sources said that is what peaks Carroll's interest most.

Mcnabb Blogs "We Need Playmakers"

McNabb says team should restock and 'secure some playmakers'

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
ESPN.com news services

It sounds like a holiday wish list, albeit a tad late, but Philadelphia Eagles quarterback Donovan McNabb made his desires known with his blog posting on yardbarker.com.

"Now that the season is over and we are concentrating on 2008, I hope we are able to secure some playmakers in all three phases of the game," McNabb wrote in his Monday posting. "Maybe some of those playmakers are already on the roster but have struggled with injuries, myself included, that have held us back a little."

Coach Andy Reid had pointed to the team's numerous injuries as one reason why the Eagles finished 8-8 this season. He also said that players should be careful in addressing personnel situations, because the person in the next locker might not take it the right way.

"I haven't heard Donovan talk about that, so I'm not answering it," Reid said during a wrapup news conference on New Year's Eve. "I know, as players, you have to be careful about saying that, because those are your teammates that are being replaced. Most players don't get into that, who really care about their teammates on the other side."

McNabb didn't mention any names of play-makers and difference-makers he'd like to have on his side, but he did direct attention to a certain undefeated team and how it went about its business.

"You can't argue with how the Patriots went outside their locker room and stocked up on playmakers last year. It certainly helped to have Randy Moss, Donte' Stallworth, Wes Welker and Adalius Thomas making plays for them all year," McNabb said in his blog posting.

"I'm surprised that anyone would have a problem with me, or anyone else in the organization, expressing a desire to bring in more quality players," he added. "We were 8-8. There is room for improvement. This is a competitive sport. It's about putting together the best players, the best team, and giving yourself the best chance to win.

"We didn't disrespect anyone when we traded for Takeo Spikes or signed Kevin Curtis last year. I don't think the Patriots were being disrespectful to Troy Brown or Reche Caldwell when they brought in Moss, Stallworth and Welker. Over the past few years, when the 49ers added Nate Clements, the Seahawks added Julian Peterson, the Giants added Plaxico Burress, the Colts added Adam Vinatieri, it was in an effort to add playmakers. In each case the team identified a way to improve and they took action.

"I don't think that's being disrespectful to any of my teammates. It's certainly not my intention. I bet that anyone who wants to see the Eagles win -- from Mr. Lurie, to the entire locker room, to every Eagles fan who bleeds green would agree."

McNabb spokesman Rich Burg said the blog posting was not in response to Reid, but to what media critics were saying.

Well besides Westbrook, and a inconsistent Brown who do they have? Smith's a good tight end, but they need an offensive playmaker. Javon wants out of the Broncos, and would be great addition to the E-A-G-L-E-S.
