The National Hockey League came down hard again on New York Islanders forward Chris Simon on Wednesday, handing him a 30-game suspension for stepping on Pittsburgh's Jarkko Ruutu last weekend.
"There were several factors that were considered in imposing the largest suspension in NHL history for an on-ice incident," explained NHL Vice President Colin Campbell in a statement.
"While fortunate, Mr. Ruutu suffered no serious injury as a result of Chris Simon's actions, the deliberate act of kicking an opponent with a skate blade, especially when that opponent is in a vulnarable position, is and always has been a repugnant and totally unacceptable act in the game of hockey."
With the decision, Simon will forfeit $292,683 to the Players' Emergency Assistance Fund and is eligible to return to the Islanders' lineup Feb. 21 against the Tampa Bay Lightning. In light of the severity of the discipline, a source close to the case believes Simon will be quick to appeal it.
Dayum, that's a lot more time than I thought he was going to get. Oh well, it's his own fault. He could have seriously injured Ruutu by stepping on him with his skates, and possibly could have ended his career.
He shouldn't be allowed to play in the NHL again. They know how rough Simon can be, we seen that last year when he chopped Ryan Hollweg in the face with his stick. I understand giving him another chance after the Hollweg' incident, but not this one.

First you say it's longer, then you say it's not long enough?? Make up your mind. Anyway, as I've said other places, I think teams should stop signing talentless pricks like Simon, eventually telling the team i.e. the Islanders, that they can't replace his roster spot until after the suspension

When I said it was a lot more time than I thought he was going to get, I meant that the NHL is full of retards and probably wouldn't give him that much time. I figured maybe a ten game suspension.
IMO he shouldn't be allowed to play and his suspension wasn't long enough...30 games sets a record sure, but this guy has been suspended multiple times, and a few that could have ended peoples careers, he's a dangerous player who shouldn't be allowed into the NHL...and the Islanders "back" him up....just a disgrace for the team...

TAMPA, Fla. - Vincent Lecavalier scored with 41.6 seconds left in the third period and rookie Karri Ramo made 31 saves to lead the Tampa Bay Lightning past the Toronto Maple Leafs, 2-1, on Thursday night.
Fuck sakes, this is the second game in a row that the Leafs have failed within the last minute. Tonight in Tampa, and the other night in Carolina. They need to pick up their game, losing Bryan McCabe isn't an excuse to play poorly.
