| That's a terrible question, there's never a definitive answer is there? I've got a few suggestions for each sport, but not any definitive answer. Football/Soccer - Pele, Maradona Rugby Union - Barry John Boxing - Jack Johnson, Joe Louis Cricket - Don Bradman As for all round sportsman. CB Fry without doubt, check out the stats!! | |||||||||||||||

| It's very tough to say. Pele is an obvious choice, because he was the best player in the world's most popular sport, and has served over the years as a good ambassador for the sport. Then there's Muhammad Ali, who was one of the first politically active athletes, and his effect was felt both in and outside of the ring. As an American, Babe Ruth comes to mind as well. He was the first real "superstar" athlete. He was a larger than life figure who captivated American society in the 1920's and 30's. Also, there is Michael Jordan, who, besides being the greatest ever in his individual sport, has also been one of the most heavily marketed athletes ever, and one of the most successful businessmen in the sports industry. All in all, though, I would say Pele | |||||||||||||||

| I agree with DK, I don't think there's a real answer to this question. Living in America, I've been taught that the onl sports that matter are the ones that are popular here in the states, so with that, I'd never know how much of an impact Pele' has had unless I researched it, which I haven't. I know the name obviously, but I know David Beckham's name also and I know he isn't the best football/soccer player in the world. He's just banging posh, which is enough bragging rights for me.. | |||||||||||||||
