I read one statistician who estimates a player's "value" by estimating how many wins he's likely to contribute, times a certain "value per win". He had Teixeira being worth 8 years, $153 million, or a little over $19 million per year. He did note, however, that his fielding evaluation system was a little tougher on Tex than some others, and since fielding is tough to evaluate, his true "value" could be closer to the $180 they gave him.
I'm happy the Yankees got him. But I'm not happy they got Burnett. It's almost definitely gonna be Carl Pavano Part 2. All along I said Burnett was the guy I most wanted to stay away from. Hopefully he proves me wrong...
Tom Verducci on SI.com had a couple pretty big points about the Texeira deal. One that jumped out at me was that by signing him, the Yankees kept him away from the arch rival Red Sox. That alone is worth something above what the players is otherwise "worth".
lmao.. Verducci is awful. also, what do you mean they kept him away from the Red Sox? The Sox pulled out of this thing as soon as the price went up.. they clearly didn't want to play the game.

Yeah I think the Sox thought they were overpaying, and when they saw it went even farther up they were like fuck that.

Yeah, the Red Sox had NO interest in him whatsoever...it's not like they were on the verge of signing him before the Yankees jumped in or anything. No skin off their backs...

They clearly had a strong interest in him, but at the same time are in good shape without him.

Exactly. The Sox were not involved at the point at deal was reached between the Yanks and Texeira. But if the player had stayed on the market for longer, there's nothing to say Boston would have gotten involved again. So while its not like they stole Texeira away right before he signed with the Sox, they did get a player that Boston clearly had an interest at adding, if the price had been right.

Didn't say they had NO interest.. but last I heard the Sox pulled out of the running over a week before he signed with the Yanks but nevertheless... everyone is acting as though the Sox aren't going to do anything. Clearly, the Sox can pickup whoever they want after the Yankees are done. Last time I checked there are 25 roster spots available to each team and nobody else can compete with the Red Sox for players besides the Yankees... but anyway.. I'm not happy about any of it.. I think the sport needs a salary cap in the worst way and sooner or later the other owners will start moving in that direction.. Then, the Yanks can get rid of Cashman and hire a legitimate talent evaluator because he obviously has no idea how to do anything but write checks, throw shit at the wall, and see if it sticks..
The day that Tex signed with the Yankees, the Washington Post reported that he was on the verge of signing with Boston.
That day, I had sent an e-mail to a bunch of my friends with a link to that Washington Post article, and how disappointed I was, because I wanted Tex from the beginning and not only were the Yankees not going to get him (signing AJ fucking Burnett instead), he was going to go to a team in the same division that was already better, talent-wise. Then, 4 or 5 hours later, the Teixeira to the Yankees news broke.
btw, AJ Burnett fucking blows
Also, the Yankees payroll is actually going to go DOWN next season. As of right now, their payroll stands at $186 million. Their opening day payroll was $209 million last season, I believe.
Oh I know.. RE: payroll, I read that yesterday and I don't know what was more surprising, the fact that it was going down or the fact that they were REALLY overpaying some of those dudes last year..
Anyways, I think it sucks that the Yankees have dealt out four of the five richest contracts in baseball history and the other was A-Rod who they picked up after a few years in..
I think it also sucks that the Yanks can sweep a Carl Pavano mess under the rug whereas a move like that would have killed a smaller market team..
Don't get me wrong, the Red Sox are getting just as bad. Their change in uniforms right before the Holiday was sickening.. an obvious ploy to exploit more cash out of RED SOX NATION~! like Henry and co. don't have enough.
It's one of the main reasons I like football. First, I probably like football as a sport better regardless.. but not that much better.. I love that every team has a shot at winning the Super Bowl after a couple years of sucking. A team like the Royals, Pirates, Brewers, are probably never winning the series and if they do, they'll lose all their players to free agency the following year. The Yanks and Sox are always in the playoffs..
This is coming from a 49ers fan whom watched his team dominate the league with overspending a little more than a decade ago. I still think the salary cap is great for the league and as the Patriots and others have proved.. you can still build a dynasty with great coaching, talent evaluating, etc..
Also, as a Braves fan.. I realize they always had one of the higher payrolls in baseball, but the difference wasn't nearly as outrageous as the difference between the Yanks, Sox, and everyone else..
I'm the only one who thinks it's crap that the Brewers had a zero chance of signing C.C.?
