The Washington Nationals made their best New York Yankees impersonation on Wednesday.
According to MLB.com, the team made an eight-year, $160 million offer to free-agent first baseman Mark Teixeira.
The Los Angeles Angels, Boston Red Sox, and, yes, the Yankees have been rumored to be chasing the switch-hitter, but the Web site reports that Teixeira has been the Nats' top offseason target.
The Los Angeles Times reported on Wednesday that the Baltimore Orioles have also made an offer to Teixeira, believed to be for seven years and about $150 million.
The newspaper also reported that the Angels have given agent Scott Boras the parameters of a deal to bring back Teixeira.
"Scott knows where we stand," Angels general manager Tony Reagins said, according to the Times. "We have a level of salary and years that we're comfortable with, and hopefully that will get it done. . . . If it doesn't, we'll have to move on."
Foxsports.com reported on Wednesday that the Red Sox were making headway in talks to sign Teixeira and that he was their No. 1 priority this offseason.
The Nationals finished 28th in the league last season in runs scored, 26th in batting average and 28th in home runs. Teixeira batted .321 with 33 home runs and 121 RBIs for the Atlanta Braves and Angels.
The Nationals went 59-102 last year and finished last in the NL East. After being traded by the Braves at the deadline, Teixeira helped the Angels run away to the AL West crown.
In the first postseason experience of his six-year career, Teixeira batted .467 in the ALDS, but the Angels lost in four games to the Red Sox.
Hopefully he comes to the Red Sox. They are hurting on offense right now...
I wouldnt say the Sox are "hurting" on offense. We're a healthy Papi and a post sophmore slump Ellsbury away from being better ofensively.
But...The Nationals either need to draw at the gates, if they get Tex, they will get more people to the park, which will help them get more good players. Its actually one helluva smart move to build a team around.

I dont see Ortiz being the same ever again. Just my opinion.
yeah, Im hoping that your wrong...but I can also see the same decline you must be talking about. Hopefully its just injury related, but who knows.
And by the looks of things, the AL East is going to be about pitching pitching pitching, since TBs staff is still intact, the NYY's are going for an overhaul, and hopefully we get Beckett back at full strength.

Wouldn't be suprised if Theo gets rid of Ortiz right now just in time before he falls off big time. Guy has a great track record of getting rid of people before awful declines. Nomar, Pedro etc...
Yeah, Ive heard the rumors already. But the only thing that bothers me, is that with Ortiz you need to find a team that 1.)needs a DH, and 2.)has somebody to protect him in the lineup, and 3.)actualyl has something worthwhile to offer us.
