I'm torn on this one, and I have a lot to say.

On one hand, Sean Avery is a douchebag and an complete moron, and it was a deplorable thing to say. In this day and age you simply can't go around talking about women like that, which didn't occur to me until I talked to some girls about it (I laughed the first time I heard it). The NHL is having a hard enough time as it is attracting fans, and they can't afford to alienate half the population without reprimand. I don't think us guys realize at first how offensive "sloppy seconds" is as a term, but it infers so much unfairness and misogyny and sexism that it's actually quite disgusting.

On the other hand, I sincerely believe that Avery is GREAT for the National Hockey League. He's one of two or three guys in the ENTIRE LEAGUE who speaks his mind, who stirs the pot and doesn't walk around like a braindead zombie, and in my opinion the NHL should be doing everything they can to encourage that (sexist comments, notwithstanding). As it is, the NHL has never had a clue how to market itself, and I think a lot of that is due to the way North American hockey players are conditioned from a very young age to quit school, to worship their coaches, to speak exclusively in cliches -- to basically be robots. It's become slightly more common recently for prospects to go to college, but I still consider NHLers the least educated of all major pro athletes.

And I'm not saying Avery is educated (or even close), but he's a guy who interests me off the ice, and that's more than can be said for 99% of the rest of the league. I wanted to watch the Flames-Stars game to see how Phaneuf would react, and I was furious that the league thought it had to get in the way of that. There's truth to the argument that they were trying to prevent another Bertuzzi-Moore incident (and it's possible, Phaneuf is a retard), but I think a fine would have sufficed, along with an apology from Avery.

I'm curious to hear others' opinions on this, though, for sure.

You're right, Freak. Avery is an interesting character and the league needs more of them.. interesting characters I mean, not really douchebags..

Lets look at Sidney Crosby. He's awesome. He's one of the young star players on my favorite team and maybe even a household name in the United States which is big for a hockey player in this day and age, but the NHL is still doing a horrible job in marketing him. Where Can anyone even see him play for one, and two.. why aren't there a billion commercials on television telling everyone how great he is or just getting his face on the screen like the NFL does with Peyton Manning and others?? Nobody knows anything about who this kid is or what his personality is like... nothing.

As for the Avery comment, the league took action because the last thing they want is some women's groups picketing outside of arenas. It's why Micheal Vick is in jail on dogfighting charges and Pacman Jones in playing this Sunday. Nobody cares until these interest groups are involved.

And no, I would never say something like that about an ex.. it's pretty immature because in reality.. I'm guessing Avery got someone else's 'sloppy seconds' unless this girl was a virgin.

There's being a 'badass' for publicity, and there's crossing the line. This comment, most definitely crossed the line, for a couple reasons:

Firstly, it came out of nowhere, left field as it were, and it was deliberate.
Secondly, well, it was quite disgusting from many perspectives.

There are those that would argue that it's not disgusting, and it's not an insult, but hey, when it comes down to it, it was.

The league itself would have suffered a LOT more had they let that go unnoticed. Maybe the guy learns his lesson, maybe he continues to be an asshole, who knows, but I'm sure the punishments will just get much, much harsher if comments like that continue from him.

Personally, I found the comment mildly amusing, but I have a very sick sense of humor at times.
