Sean Payton's persistence finally won out. The New Orleans Saints acquired Jeremy Shockey for a second- and a fifth-round draft pick in 2009.
"Jeremy is a player that we are excited to have on our roster. He is someone I am familiar with as a player," Payton said. "He brings a skill set to the position that I feel will be a tremendous benefit to our offense."

Re: Giants agree to trade Shockey to Saints for picks
Shockey is such a diva. I don't think he's going to fit in too well in New Orleans. The Giants obviously won't miss him, seeing as how they didn't need him to win a superbowl.
Re: Giants agree to trade Shockey to Saints for picks
I spent all night crying into my Shockey jersey lol
On a serious note, things obviously weren't going to work out with him and the Giants, and I'm glad they got a few draft picks for him.
Also, he'll probably be a better fit in the Saints pass-heavy system, as opposed to the Giants' run-heavy offense. In fact, I heard one of Shockey's complaints was that he was being used too much as a run blocker, and wasn't running pass routes as much as he would have liked.
Also, the Saints needed him much worse than the Giants did. The Saints TEs have been pretty mediocre, so he's a big upgrade at that position. Kevin Boss showed some potential last year, and on a team whose first priority is to run the ball, the Giants have plenty of receiving options (Plaxico, Toomer, Steve Smith, Boss, Tyree, Mario Manningham, Sinorice Moss)
That said, I find it pretty immature that the major reason for his huge hissy-fit was because he was upset that the team did well without him. I mean, seriously...did he ever give any legitimate justification for why he was mad? He just had a bruised ego, and he took it out on the Giants instead of taking a look inward.
Also, Jerry Reese, the Giants GM, doesn't take shit from nobody. I like him. Actually, I loved him ever since somebody asked him why he didnt re-sign Luke Petitgout, and he said "Because he's not a good player" hahaha

Re: Giants agree to trade Shockey to Saints for picks
Saints got Johnathan Vilma and Jeremy Shockey. Two New York Diva's down in the Biyou. The Shockey situation needed to happen because the Giants grew out of the Shockey Experience. Saints offense always appears loaded but Drew has to have a line that could protect him and do a better job for New Orleans. Giants didn't need Shockey because they have Kevin Boss and the Best Ivy League Pron Name in the Business at Full back in Madison Hedgecock.

Re: Giants agree to trade Shockey to Saints for picks
Wow, I just read that the Giants might end up gettign a first-round pick out of the deal...
When the Saints traded for Jonathon Vilma, they agreed to send the Jets a 2nd-round pick if both of the following criteria are met:
1. Vilma plays on 85% of defensive plays
2. Vilma signs a contract extension before the end of the 2008 season
If those two things happen and the Saints have to send their 2nd round pick to the Jets, the Giants and Saints have an agreement in place that the Giants will receive NO's 1st-round pick instead of their 2nd-round pick.

...so the Giants have to do literally nothing, but they get their 2nd round pick upgraded to a 1st round pick?
Re: Giants agree to trade Shockey to Saints for picks
Yeah, basically...they just have to hope Vilma stays healthy and signs a contract extension

Re: Giants agree to trade Shockey to Saints for picks
If I were the Saints' GM, I would have asked the Giants for a 3rd or 4th round pick, another player, or at least some cash. Or I would have rearranged the deal with the Jets. This is like the worst trade negotiating I've ever seen. They had clearly previously assessed that Shockey was worth only a 2nd rounder, but for no reason I see other than sheer lack of intelligence, they suddenly are giving up a 1st round pick for him.
I've got to suspect that this deal hasn't been finalized yet, or that some details were left out, because it doesn't make any sense.
Re: Giants agree to trade Shockey to Saints for picks
But couldn't they just limit the plays that Vilma is in on to make sure thet don't give up their 1st Round Pick?
If they make the Playoffs early then they'll bench him for a game or two or they will rig it so that he plays 84.99 of snaps surely because Shockey ain't worth a 1st rounder.

No, that was part of the trade with the Jets, as in, those things have to be agreed upon for Vilma to leave N.O. Why else would new Orleans care about how much playing time he gets in New York, or about his contract at the end of the season? But they'd still have to give NYG the first round pick because they would already be under obligation to give NYJ the second round pick.
If you ask me, some Cajuns just got swindled by some New Yorkers.
