My All-Star Rosters

If the All-Star rosters were 100% constructed by me, this is how I would do it. Rules for this exercise are:

33 players total
1 representative from each team
12 pitchers, 21 position players
3 catchers, 10 infielders, 8 outfielders, and at least 1 back-up at all positions
8 starting pitchers, 4 relievers
Unlike actual ASG, I differentiate between the 3 OF positions
Focus on non-team-dependent stats, like BA/OBP/SLG and SBs for hitters, ERA, strikeouts, and WHIP for pitchers. Runs scored, RBIs, wins/losses, and saves can go to hell

I'll do the American League first, then the NL:

Catcher:
Starter: Joe Mauer - Twins: .325/.415/.454, 4 HRs
Reserves: Dioner Navarro - Rays: .318/.370/.435, 4 hRs
AJ Pierzynski - White Sox: .296/.333/.442

First base:
Starter: Kevin Youkilis - Red Sox: .311/.382/.534, 13 HRs
Reserves: Jason Giambi - Yankees: .256/.393/.537, 18 HRs
Justin Morneau - Twins: .307/.369/.481, 12 HRs

Second Base:
Starter: Ian Kinsler - Rangers: .332/.391/.545, 14 HRs, 23 SBs, 1 CS
Reserve: Brian Roberts - Orioles: .295/.373/.493, 7 HRs, 24 SBs, 7 CS

Shortstop:
Starter: Michael Young - Rangers: .292/.342/..421, 7 HRs, 5 SBs, 0 CS
Reserve: Derek Jeter - Yankees: .281/.343/.385, 4 HRs, 5 SBs, 2 CS (any other year this wouldn't be good enough, but AL shortstops have been TERRIBLE this year)

Third Base:
Starter: Alex Rodriguez - Yankees: .323/.408/.606, 18 HRs, 13 SBs, 1 CS
Reserves: Evan Longoria - Rays: .281/.353/.537, 16 HRs, 6 SBs, 0 CS
Mike Lowell - Red Sox: .297/.356/.517, 13 HRs

Re: My All-Star Rosters

It makes me happy to see Marcum and Doc on this list, if only McGowan kept his 2.95 ERA that he had a month or so ago v.v

Re: My All-Star Rosters

I think there were a few guys that had better ERAs than Halladay, but I had to take Halladay because he's a workhorse (look at the innings pitched!) and the excellent WHIP is too much to ignore.

Re: My All-Star Rosters

Good idea Tom, I'll start thinking of mine and post it soon. But in the meantime, I have to just point out that I completely disagree with the way the All-Star teams are assembled. Fans have no business voting in the teams. Case in point - your starting AL shortstop is Derek Jeter?

That there is proof enough that this is a popularity contest.

And now, here it is...your moment of Carlin (10/13/2008)

Anything but the Present

America has no now. We're reluctant to acknowledge the present. It's too embarrassing.

Instead, we reach into the past. Our culture is composed of sequels, reruns, remakes, revivals, reissues, rereleases, re-creations, reenactments, adaptations, anniversaries, memorabilia, oldies radio, and nostalgia record collections. World War II has been refought on television so many times, the Germans and Japanese are now drawing residuals.

Of course, being essentially out of shit, we sometiems feel the need to dress up this past preoccupation, as with pathetic references to reruns as "encore presentations".

The players don't exactly do a bang-up job of voting either...Jason Varitek???
