Greatest athletes to have worn each number (1-99)

This is something I've actually been mulling over myself for the past couple years now -- an idea I might eventually go somewhere with, if it hasn't been done before...

Basically, who would you say are the greatest athletes (in any sport, but probably focus on the big American four) to have worn numbers 1 through 99? For example, I think it's pretty easy to give Michael Jordan #23, Wayne Gretzky #99, Jerry Rice #80.

Don't try to attack it all at once -- let's just come up with an early list of nominees.

EDIT: I'll update the following list of suggested nominees when I find the time. Feel free to debate those nominated, and to suggest alternatives...

00: Robert Parish, Jim Otto
0: Gilbert Arenas
1: Oscar Robertson, Warren Moon, Jacques Plante, Terry Sawchuk
2: Derek Jeter, Moses Malone
3: Babe Ruth

Re: Greatest athletes to have worn each number (1-99)

Ah, there's gonna be stiff competition at all the single-digits -- Gordie Howe and Rocket Richard, for instance, have a pretty good claim on number 9 as well.

Weird numbers like 68 (Jaromir Jagr) will be easier -- though who knows if there's some HOF offensive lineman who wore that one, maybe there is.

Wait didn't Gwynn wear 19 as well?

And I think Parish was 00 but I'm not sure.

Re: Greatest athletes to have worn each number (1-99)

I'm realizing I don't know very many baseball numbers at all, so let me know if there's someone more deserving I'm unaware of.

Football:

16 - Joe Montana
19 - Johnny Unitas
32 - Jim Brown
34 - Walter Payton
56 - LT
75 - Deacon Jones
78 - Bruce Smith
92 - Reggie White

Hockey:

4 - Bobby Orr (sorry Brett!)
29 - Ken Dryden

Basketball:

6 - Bill Russell
13 - Wilt Chamberlain
32 - Uh oh, Magic Johnson or Jim Brown?

This is tough.
