NFL: News and Notes and Roster Moves.

Quote:
Less than a week after signing quarterback Jeff George, who hasn't thrown an NFL pass in five years, the Oakland Raiders cut the former No. 1 overall pick.

George, the top pick by Indianapolis in 1990, previously played for Oakland in 1997-98, was viewed mostly an insurance policy for the Raiders, who already have Aaron Brooks, Andrew Walter and Marques Tuiasosopo on the roster.

George, 38, played with the Colts from 1990-93. He was in Atlanta from 1994-96, then spent two seasons with Oakland and one with Minnesota before joining the Redskins in 2000. He was signed by Seattle as insurance midway through the 2002 season, but didn't play. Chicago signed him late in 2004, but he never played for the Bears either.

George, known for his rifle arm and clashes with coaches, has a 46-78 career record as a starter and has never lasted longer than four years with any team. He has thrown for 27,602 yards, with 154 touchdowns and 113 interceptions in his career.

ST. LOUIS -- With Stephen Davis in a Rams uniform, the St. Louis Rams cut veteran Moe Williams and nine other players Saturday to get down to the league-mandated 53-man roster.

Davis, a three-time Pro-Bowl running back released by Carolina in the spring, signed with St. Louis on Friday.

Rams coach Scott Linehan indicated Davis would play in the season opener Sept. 10 against Denver despite not being in game-day shape, which led to the thought of keeping four backs on the roster.

"It was certainly considered but then you have to lose a fullback or a tight end," Linehan said. "At the end, it all adds up to the number we planned from the start. It's never perfect, but right now it's the best 53 to get ourselves ready for next Sunday."

Also released Saturday were quarterback Dave Ragone, tight end Jerome Collins, cornerback DeJuan Groce, defensive tackles Brian Howard and Tim Sandidge, linebacker Tim McGarigle, guard Tony Palmer, running back Fred Russell and wide receiver Dominique Thompson.

CLEVELAND -- It was a busy day for the Browns, who made 22 roster moves to get down to the 53-player limit.

Running back Lee Suggs, Cleveland's leading rusher in 2004 but slowed by injuries throughout his career, was waived. The club tried to trade Suggs last month, but the deal was voided and he returned when the New York Jets said the 26-year-old failed their physical.

Coach Romeo Crennel said Suggs' medical history had no bearing on the decision.

"If that had been a major factor, he would have been cut last year," Crennel said.

The Browns also placed on injured reserve running back William Green, who led them to the playoffs as a rookie and has overcome personal problems. Green may stay on IR and be paid for the season, but, if the club works out a settlement, he'll be cut and could re-sign with Cleveland or elsewhere.

With Suggs and Green gone, second-year back Jason Wright will back up starter Reuben Droughns.

Wide receiver Frisman Jackson and cornerback Pete Hunter also had their contracts terminated.

Rookie nose tackle Babtunde Oshinowo, a sixth-round draft pick, was also waived, but the Browns might try to keep him on their practice squad.

GREEN BAY, Wis. -- The Green Bay Packers released frequently injured running back Najeh Davenport in their final round of roster cuts Saturday.

Davenport showed a punishing running style in four seasons in Green Bay, but struggled to stay healthy. He broke his ankle against New Orleans Oct. 9 and missed the rest of last season.

He returned to the Packers this year, but had nagging injuries in training camp and averaged only 2.7 yards per carry in the preseason.

Wide receiver Rod Gardner, picked up by the Packers on waivers near the end of last season, also was released on Saturday.

PITTSBURGH -- Duce Staley made the Pittsburgh Steelers' 53-man roster Saturday despite an uneven preseason.

Staley dropped to No. 3 on the depth chart at running back and may not dress for some early-season games.

Staley's roster status was in doubt -- even coach Bill Cowher said so -- after the three-time 1,000-yard rusher with the Eagles averaged 2.2 yards per carry during exhibition play. The Steelers showed their concern at the position by trading Friday with New England for rookie Patrick Cobbs.

But Cowher recalled Saturday how injuries briefly left the Steelers with only one healthy running back last season, even when they were carrying longtime star Jerome Bettis in addition to starter Willie Parker, Staley and Verron Haynes.

"We've got to be able to use these guys to where they're not going to be hit out by November and December," Cowher said. "It's very important that we're able to keep these guys fresh. It's a big key for us, a team that runs the football."

The Oakland Raiders made the first surprise move of Saturday's final cut day by trading starting wide receiver Doug Gabriel to the New England Patriots for an undisclosed draft choice.

Gabriel started five preseason games ahead of Jerry Porter and is considered to be a good, young receiver on the rise. The interesting part of the trade is how it plays into the Deion Branch holdout in New England.

The Patriots have been offered second-round choices by the Jets and the Seahawks but Friday's deadline for Branch being able to make a deal passed without anything happening. Branch filed two complaints with the NFLPA over the failed trade. The first one was because Branch feels the Patriots breached a verbal contract. The second charges that the Patriots did not negotiate in good faith.

The Patriots lost starting wide receiver David Givens to the Titans in free agency and the Branch holdout leaves them short on receivers.

The other interesting part of this trade is where it puts Porter, who has been in Art Shell's doghouse. Porter, who asked to be traded, lost his starting job. In the preseason finale against the Seahawks last Thursday, Porter was running third team and closing out the game in the final minutes.

The Raiders had depth at wide receiver with Gabriel, Porter, Randy Moss and Ronald Curry.

"Everybody came in thinking he was going to be a big part of the offense, so it was a big surprise," Curry said. "They didn't make that decision because of me. We've got some talented guys here, but I don't make those decisions."

HOUSTON (Sept. 2, 2006) -- The Houston Texans placed running back Domanick Davis on injured reserve, ending his 2006 season.

Davis, Houston's top rusher for the last three seasons, has been out for a month with a bone bruise that is causing soreness in his knee.

Texans coach Gary Kubiak decided that putting him on injured reserve would be the right thing for the team, but isn't happy about the decision.

"He's done everything he can do," Kubiak said. "It's been disappointing for him and disappointing for everybody."

Davis, who has 3,195 yards and 23 touchdowns in three NFL seasons, said it was somewhat of a relief that a decision has been made and that he plans to continue his rehabilitation.

"It's sad I won't be here in light of what is going on, because I feel that the team is going to be very good this season," he said. "I'd love to be part of it, but right now I have to get myself together. I'm glad they supported me. They felt good about what I have done in the past and what I can do."

Davis rushed for 976 yards last season despite missing six games before undergoing arthroscopic surgery in December after his knee swelled and ached each time he played. Team officials have said his current injury is unrelated to that injury.

The Texans are now left with three inexperienced running backs -- rookies Wali Lundy and Chris Taylor and second-year player Vernand Morency. Kubiak has said Lundy will be the starter in Houston's opener against Philadelphia.

Also Saturday, the Texans released veteran tackle Seth Wand to get down to the NFL-required 53-man roster.

TEMPE, Ariz. (Sept. 2, 2006) -- Fullback James Hodgins and tight end Eric Edwards were among 20 players cut by the Arizona Cardinals.

Hodgins, limited to one game over the past two seasons because of injuries, was scheduled to make $1 million this season. In addition, the Cardinals seldom use a fullback in coach Dennis Green's offense.

Edwards started nine games last season, but lost out to second-year pro Adam Bergen and 6-foot-8 rookie Leonard Pope, a third-round draft pick out of Georgia.

Also released was offensive tackle Jeremy Bridges, who had been working with the first team following the injury to Oliver Ross, but was replaced when the Cardinals acquired Brandon Gorin from New England.

Among the cuts was former Notre Dame quarterback turned wide receiver Carlyle Holiday.

Others released were running back Damien Anderson, fullback John Bronson, linebacker Mark Brown, defensive tackle Tim Bulman, cornerback Dyshod Carter, safety Chris Harrell, cornerback Darrell Hunter, linebacker Isaac Keys, defensive end Tyler King, wide receiver Greg Lee, center Shawn Lynch, safety Jay McCareins, offensive tackle Alan Reuber, wide receiver Michael Spurlock, wide receiver Todd Watkins, and cornerback Justin Wyatt.

Safety Jack Brewer and linebacker Lance Mitchell were waived injured. The team reached injury settlements with defensive ends Kenny King and Anton Palepoi.

HOUSTON (Sept. 1, 2006) -- Antowain Smith looked good in Houston's last exhibition game, but in the end the Texans chose youth over experience when they cut the 34-year-old running back.

Houston released 18 other players, but still must cut two more to get to 53-man limit by the NFL deadline on Sept. 2.

Coach Gary Kubiak said releasing Smith was a tough decision but they felt rookie Chris Taylor could be more valuable to the team.

"But the bottom line was that it was a decision about youth and about Chris' ability to become a returner, which is something we think he can do in this league," Kubiak said.

Starter Domanick Davis has been out for more than a month with a bone bruise on his left knee and will likely be placed on injured reserve, but Kubiak said they haven't made the decision yet.

"We're gathering all that information and trying to do the absolute best thing for him and for this football team," Kubiak said. "I want to take all the time we can to make that decision."

The release of Smith leaves the Texans with three healthy running backs, rookies Taylor and Wali Lundy and second-year player Vernand Morency.

The Texans also released quarterbacks Cody Pickett and Quinton Porter, leaving them with David Carr and backup Sage Rosenfels.

Linebacker Sam Cowart, a nine-year veteran who has struggled with injuries, was also released. Cowart started 14 games for the Minnesota Vikings last season and led the team with 104 tackles. He also had two sacks and six tackles for loss.

Other veterans released were guard David Loverne, fullback Nick Luchey, wide receiver Jake Schifino, linebackers Courtney Watson and Kenneth Pettway, defensive end Earl Cochran and free safety Kevin Curtis.

Rookies Jeff Charleston, a defensive end, wide receiver Richie Ross, free safety John Walker and cornerback Tramon Williams were also cut.

Also released were cornerback Mark Estelle, tight end Aaron Halterman, guard Chris Watton and defensive end Darrell Wright.

In another move, the Texans placed linebacker Kailee Wong on the physically unable to perform list as he continues to recover from knee surgery.
