| MVP? After considering Tom's words about Brett Favre vs. Tom Brady in the MVP race in the NFL I got to thinking. Shouldn't they possibly rename the award the Most Outstanding Player or something like that? Value is incredibly hard to determine. Take the NBA for example. I'd personally find a 4/5 more valuable than a 1/2 because there are less of them. I'd find a player like Dirk more valuable than someone like Kobe. Dirk is like 1/100 wheras Kobe is like 1/25 for example. Whereas I believe Kobe's play outshines Dirks, I still think Dirk is the most valuable. Thoughts? | |||||||||||||||

| Re: MVP? To me, "Most Valuable Player" is more given to an individual, but refers to how he did in a team sense. How valuable was he to his team? On the other hand, "Most Outstanding Player" is more looking solely at the player by himself and evaluating his performance. How the team did as a whole really doesn't mean a whole lot. Take this example: Barry Sanders on the Detroit Lions. He was an "Outstanding Player". His individual stats are viewed by some to make him one of, if not the, best RB in the game. But how valuable was he to his team? To me, a team doesn't accomplish a whole lot (in the NFL anyway) if they can't even make it into the playoffs, something the Lions just don't do. I don't know how "Valuable" Barry really could be viewed if his team was finishing 8-8 or below each season. That's my take on it anyway. | |||||||||||||||

| Re: MVP? I wish I could find the person who named the "Best Player" award "Most Valuable Player" and take him behind an abandoned warehouse and shoot him in the back of the head. The fact that he added the word "Value" to it makes stupid sportswriters overthink, and thinking is not exactly their strong points. There's a reason why they write about sports, and aren't doctors, physicists, lawyers, etc... The person who is the most valuable is the player who is the best. His teammates should not affect how he is judged. I like to put it this way: The nicest house in Compton is not as "valuable" as the worst house in Beverly Hills, even though it's the most valuable on its "team" (its neighborhood). | |||||||||||||||
