Re: Report: Favre Will Retire

I never meant to change your opinion I was clarifying what I thought might have been wrong with it. I personally find it difficult to measure eras against each other. So personally I think it's hard to compare them all. If you don't want him in your Top 5 that's fine. Just wanting some clarifications.

Re: Report: Favre Will Retire

It's certainly not that I don't want him there, I loved him as a player. I just have my opinions of why I cannot place him there.

Re: Report: Favre Will Retire

I was just playing Devil's Advocate with the INT thing...

You will never ever mistake me for a Favre apologist. I think Favre was a great player whose career accomplishments were exaggerated by hack journalists like Peter King, who would have you believe that Favre is God himself.

As for the comparing championships thing...It's a TEAM sport. You can't judge the accomplishments of a player on the quality of the team around him.

Is Ted Williams not a great player because he never won a championship? Ernie Banks? Jim Kelly? Karl Malone? Charles Barkley? Barry Sanders?

Barry Sanders played 10 years for one of the mosy dysfunctional franchises in sports, and if you say he's not inthe top 5 running backs of all time, you're out of your fucking mind.

OK, and let's move past the A-Rod-Lowell for a second...how about A-Rod vs. Jeter? Do you really think Jeter is a "greater" player than A-Rod?

And lastly, before this year I NEVER said Brady was better than Manning. Even before Peyton won the Super Bowl I ranked him ahead of Brady. You must have me mistaken with someone else.

I actually think most of your logic is sound, with the exception of the championships thing

Re: Report: Favre Will Retire

I would like to put on the record on March 6th 2008 that I fully believe that Bret Favre WILL play in the 2008-2009 season.

DD's Favorite of All Times

I finally played live and it was fantastic.

I'd call that a pretty precarious limb you're stepping out on...

Well.. here's the thing. When you are comparing two athletes whom are both tremendous players, both lock hall of famers, you have to find things to separate the two. Starr's teams never blew games in the playoffs, and Favre was directly responsible for costing the Packers a couple playoff games. It's the way Favre plays. Like I said previously, his style was entertaining and without playing as he did, he wouldn't have been him. But it also had it's downside. Sometimes he was TOO risky.

You would agree that the way quarterbacks play in the postseason is the most important aspect in judging their careers, right?

And I'm sure you would also agree that the Quarterback in football gets the most credit and therefore, should take more hits than everyone else? I mean.. every play is run through him. If you're a team that passes quite a bit, you are running the entire offense with what decisions you make.

Also, on the Jeter/A-Rod thing. They aren't on a similar level of ability, so I wouldn't dare compare the two, however, it'd be fair for me to say I'd rather have Jeter on my team, wouldn't it?

Fair enough...if you need a tiebreaker or something like that, I can get down with playoff performance deciding the difference.

I would disagree strongly with this. I would consider the way they played their ENTIRE career more important than play in the postseason. I trust 200 games worth of performances more than a dozen or so.

Quarterback is a unique position, in that it is MUCH more important than any of the other positions on the field. I certainly agree with you on this.

Ok.. but then let me ask you. Would you have rather had Joe Namath or Drew Bledsoe?

Re: Report: Favre Will Retire

Drew Bledsoe

Joe Namath sucked (more career INTs than TDs), and I'm not gonna give him credit for one good game, in which his team only scored 16 points on a rushing TD and 3 FGs. His defense's 4 INTs probably had a lot more to do with them winning than anything Namath did on the field

Football is football, regardless of the time of year it's being played. It's about throwing, catching, blocking, etc. It doesnt magically "change" when the calendar turns to January.

Sometimes good players have bad games, and sometimes bad players have good games. It's just the way things go, but when it happens in the playoffs, to most fans/sportswriters it's never a matter of circumstance, it's always some deficiency of character that causes a player to "choke" or some virtuous trait that makes them "clutch". There always has to be some deeper meaning behind things that happen in the playoffs, when in actuality it's very often a matter of luck
