Re: Report: Favre Will Retire

A great player, great career. I'll always remember how feared opponents were to face Green Bay at Lambeau in the middle of winter. Problem for Favre cracking the top 5 of all-time is that he's not even the best QB in Packers history. That'd go to Bart Starr. Not to take anything away from Brett..

Not to hijack the thread or anything, but what in the world are you basing this on?

I'd imagine neither of us have seen Starr play more than odd highlight here and there, maybe a game or two on ESPN Classic, so you must just be making a decision based on Starr's championships. Which I suppose is far.

My father and grandfather, however, both longtime Packers fans, say there's never been a greater player in team history than Brett.

Re: Report: Favre Will Retire

Well, I based it on a couple things. First, I've listened to many experts describe Starr's career compared to that of all the other great Quarterbacks. Starr always showed up in the big game situations. He won countless championships. I'm not even sure if the guy ever lost a playoff game, and he also engineered maybe the greatest drive in the history of football against a tremendous team under intense -13 degree weather for the game-winning score. He never made the mistakes that unfortunately Brett made during some of his playoff games, he never had a playoff game close to where Brett threw 4 and 5+ interceptions.

Now.. I realize it's a different era and Starr played with a ton of hall of famers. But just like Brett, he never played with a hall of fame receiver. I'm not trying to take anything away from Favre, besides Montana whom I only saw during the end of his career, I've never seen a quarterback who'd I'd rather have than him. Maybe.. Brady, but I don't know. I'd say Brett is a better player than Marino and Elway certainly. They might have been more precision passers, but I like a quarterback who takes risks and puts his body on the line like Brett. I loved his toughness. Plus, Elway never lead a team to a Super Bowl victory quite like Favre did. He had a hall of fame level running back when he did win and as we know, Marino never won a Super Bowl period. Young and Aikman were also great in their own right, but they're very hard to judge based on how better their entire teams were compared to the rest of the competition.

I think a lot of people confuse likability with greatness. They should be judged separately.

My Top 5 all-time would be..

1. Montana
2. Unitas
3. Bradshaw
4. Staubach
5. Starr

Re: Report: Favre Will Retire

Starr did have Boyd Dowler and Max McGee, whom by all of my Grandfathers accounts were "pretty damn fine receivers" Which doesn't necessarily mean they were HOF quality, but my grandfather also would say "Favre would have more rings if he played with Dowler and McGee"

Take my grandfathers word for what you will.

Also I'd just like to point out, on my way to school, (around 9ish), pretty much every single marquee said Thanks Brett. There's also apparently supposed to be a huge fan poster signing. I don't know if it's true or not but I heard it from the grapevine

Also, since Favre has stated many times how much he loves the fans, I hope he comes back every year. Maybe even plays in a game or two

First off...

Now as far as Favre is concerned, I believe that Favre is indeed done. If you listen to the interviews, I can't blame them. He may not have won a Super Bowl, but he ended doing what every guy tries to do his entire career. He proved everyone wrong, showed after 16 seasons, he STILL had something left, and that he could STILL play with the kids.

What does that have to do with anything? If we aren't going to base players off their championships and accomplishments in big games, then what do we have to go on? Starr was better than Favre in the playoffs. He won games.

By the way, aren't you the same guy who think Brady is better than manning? Go look up their career regular season stats. It's not even close.

I'm out of here. I said what I had to say, everyone is going to be defensive about it, and Suntan... I'm sure Favre will show up when they retire his number and I'm sure he'll show up when they recognize the All-Time Packer teams.
