It was a big coup when the Patriots signed Rosevelt Colvin, but that era has come to a close.
New England released the linebacker on Tuesday. Drafted by the Bears out of Purdue in 1999, Colvin spent his first four seasons in Chicago and established himself as a pass-rushing threat from his outside linebacker position. He registered 10½ sacks in both 2001 and 2002.
The Patriots signed the 6-foot-3, 250-pound Colvin as an unrestricted free agent in 2003. He had two sacks in his first two games that season before suffering a hip injury. While he never returned to his original form, Colvin did bounce back to lead the Patriots with seven sacks in 2005 and 8½ sacks in 2006.
His 52½ career sacks rank fifth among active NFL linebackers.
Last season, Colvin started 10 of his first 11 games before being shut down with a foot injury.
The Patriots also released linebacker Oscar Lua on Tuesday. He missed last season, his first, with a knee injury.
Man I don't understand this at all, Colvin made all there other linebackers click after he went out with an injury look how less productive Vrabel and Co were.

They had to cut him. Colvin had a 7 million cap hit which meant he would of been costing them too much money. Now, that doesn't mean he can't come back if he can't get a richer deal somewhere else.

Yeah, I understand it. The dude was invisible for 4 years here and made way too much money.
I hope they draft a linebacker though. They definetly need one.

I guess its just my outside looking in, I really liked Colvin though he missed tons of games the Vrabel/Bruschi/Colvin/Thomas crew at the start of the year was awesome for the Patriots. Hopefully he ends up on a decent team like Carolina >.>

I don't see them drafting linebacker but I could see them drafting a corner. I think the guy from South Florida is a shut down corner and he is also a kick/punt returner which the Pats like to draft.
