Miami Cuts Nine Players Including QB Trent Green

Quote:
MIAMI -- Quarterback Trent Green was acquired by the Miami Dolphins last year as part of a plan to turn the franchise's fortunes around.

Not surprisingly, Bill Parcells' ideas differ from the previous model.

The Dolphins will start the season with a new starting quarterback for the fifth consecutive season.

Year QB
2008 ?
2007 Trent Green
2006 Daunte Culpepper
2005 Gus Frerotte
2004 Jay Fiedler*
*replaced at halftime by A.J. Feeley

In the Dolphins' first major player purge since Parcells took charge of Miami's football operations, the team parted ways with Green, wide receiver Marty Booker and seven other players Monday -- ushering in the start of what's expected to be a massive offseason roster shakeup by the rebuilding franchise.

"This is never easy, especially since all of these players worked hard during their tenure here," new Dolphins' general manager Jeff Ireland said.

Other notable cuts by the Dolphins included tackle L.J. Shelton and massive defensive tackle Keith Traylor, both of whom were starters.

Miami also waived tackle Anthony Alabi, defensive tackle Anthony Bryant, tackle Marion Dukes, defensive tackle Marquay Love and tackle Joe Toledo.

Most of these moves were expected, and more will undoubtedly follow over the coming weeks as Miami looks to retool following its 1-15 season. The Dolphins haven't made the playoffs in six seasons, the longest stretch in franchise history.

Green was placed on injured reserve in October after his second severe concussion in 13 months, and the 37-year-old may contemplate retirement. Traylor suggested at times last season that his 16th season may be his last.

Booker caught 50 passes in 2007, but managed only one touchdown for the second time in his four seasons with the Dolphins. Shelton started all 32 games during his two-year stay with the Dolphins and had two years left on his contract in Miami.

"I want to thank all of them for their contributions to the Dolphins and wish them good luck," Ireland said.

Parcells has already reshaped the front office, firing general manager Randy Mueller and other members of the team's player personnel staff. The coaching staff was rebuilt, most notably with Tony Sparano brought in to replace Cam Cameron as head coach.

With the start of free agency Feb. 29, Parcells' eye has clearly turned toward the roster.

"In the case of each of the veterans, it's especially difficult to release players who have been productive and valued members of the organization," Ireland said. "However, we feel these decisions are in the best interest of the team."

I hope Trent Green retires now that hes been cut to be honest, he shouldn't risk being out there now with his history. The rest aren't that suprising I guess, no Lemon next season, No green. Culpepper wants back in probably to back up Beck, Chad Johnson wants to be a Phin, Marion Barber is being offered for the first overall pick its gonna be interesting in Miami.

Yeah, Parcells has a lot of work to do but this was a good start and they have the 1st pick to work with although it's not going to be easy to trade.

Re: Miami Cuts Nine Players Including QB Trent Green

Marion Barber for the 1st pick huh? Seems like a move I would only make if I didnt want to pay out the 1st overall. I would also try to wiggle a 3rd or 4th round pick out of Dallas too.

I agree though that Trent Green should get out now with a few bucks in his wallet and just enjoy life. Open a pizza place or something.

Re: Miami Cuts Nine Players Including QB Trent Green

That's the first I've read about Barber to the Phins, and it sounds completely made-up. I'm not denying that Parcells would want Barber back -- I'm pretty sure he drafted him -- but Dallas would have to give up far more than just Barber for the 1st overall pick. Also, it's not like Ronnie Brown's career is in jeopardy or anything; so far, it looks like he'll be back for Week 1.

As for the cuts, Booker should have no problem finding somewhere to contribute -- I'm sure a team like the Vikings or Niners or Rams would love to have him. Shelton could also end up starting somewhere next year.

Re: Miami Cuts Nine Players Including QB Trent Green

I saw someone on ESPN, can't remember who, but they said Jones is infatuated with McFadden and that they might make a play for the #1 pick to get him.. a package that would include Barber and Dallas' 1st round selection.

Re: Miami Cuts Nine Players Including QB Trent Green

Yeah, I've heard about Jones' crush on McFadden, but for the Cowboys to move up that far, it's more likely they'd have to include both of their 1st-rounders as well as Barber.

Re: Miami Cuts Nine Players Including QB Trent Green

To me, it's crazy. Barber might not be an every down back because of how hard he runs, but the guy is a beast. There's no way I'd give up him and picks for an unproven Darren McFadden. I like Darren, but not that much. They'll be losing Julius Jones to free agency, but who cares.. I'm sure there's a guy out there they can pick up or maybe even draft someone like a Felix Jones.

Re: Miami Cuts Nine Players Including QB Trent Green

Oh there are definitely other backs to be had in this draft, no question. One of the deepest RB classes in a long time.

The real idiocy in all of this (whether it's true or not) is that the Cowboys would be stupid to overpay and move all the way up to #1, when they likely wouldn't have to go that high to get McFadden, and would save millions by not getting him at 1st overall.

Darren will fall. Not to the Cowboys, but as Freak said, they'd be dumb to trade up to #1 to take him.
