Mike Pereira, the league's vice president of officiating, confirmed Tuesday that the timer failed to start the clock on a completed pass in the middle of the fourth quarter. Pereira estimated the error might have added eight seconds to the game -- not enough to keep the Giants from scoring but enough to make New England grumble.

"It should've been run at 8:24," said Pereira, in Hawaii for the Pro Bowl, "and we started it after the next play. So we got most of it back. We rewound the 25-second clock to make up for some of the lost time."

Rewind the videotape to 8:24, and you find the Giants' Eli Manning taking the snap, taking several steps back and launching a pass over the middle to Amani Toomer. The wide receiver makes a diving 8-yard catch at the New York 38, 1 yard short of a first down, and the Giants are forced to punt.

But before the snap, coach Tom Coughlin can be seen hollering at officials from the sideline -- urging them to start the clock.

They did. Coughlin was right.

Now look what happens: When Jeff Feagles punts, it is with 8:02 remaining. From snap to snap, 22 seconds elapse. When the Giants had a pass completion on their previous series, they didn't run their next play until 40 seconds had elapsed.

That would suggest that as many as 18 more seconds should have been run off the clock, and while that still wouldn't have prevented the Giants from scoring at the end of the game, it might have affected how they ran their game-winning series.

Asked for an explanation of the clock failure, Pereira said the timer "just didn't hit the button" to start the clock, which is not unique. But it's rare in a game of this magnitude.

"I was aware of it," Pereira said.
Some crazy Patriots fan on Youtube actually counted how much time was given to the Giants, something like a total of 31 seconds on the final drive. Which is a hell of a lot considering how the game ended, theres no way to tell if it would have changed the game (Eli to Burres with 1 second left would be bad ass)

18 seconds.

I bet they were happy those extra 18 seconds came off the clock when the Pats were up 14-10, right?

Theres been a couple arguments thrown around that Eli was "In the grasp" of Thomas and the play should have been called dead on the pass to Tyree to. Crrrraaazzzy people, If he was in the grasp he obviously wouldnt have gotten out lol

If they would have blown the whistle on that play, it would have been cause for termination. To the ref.

Re: Time(r) Was On Giants Side For Superbowl Win

Meh, big deal. We got smoked. Get over it Pats fans.

I'll tell ya, as soon as I saw Manning get out of the swarm of Pats and then threw the ball to Tyree I KNEW the game was lost as a Pats fan.

I was more concerned when there was 1:28 left on the clock and they fucked up the clock there.

Yeah, while that was going on, I immediately thought to myself 'Oh Jesus, don't let this be an excuse for Pats fans, because so far they don't have a single one.' Fortunately, it was a pretty moot point.

Re: Time(r) Was On Giants Side For Superbowl Win

The clock on the telecast fucked up a couple of times, but then they eventually resynched with the official clock.

I remember on the Giants opening drive, the clocked stopped at 6:02, and the Giants ran another play without the clock moving. Finally, when the Giants lined up for the FG, it went instantly from 6:02 to 5:05 or something like that. So, even though the clocks that we all saw were malfunctioning, I think the official clock was working for the most part.

The play before 1:28 that Simon talked about was when Jacobs ran for the first down on 4th and 1. The referee blew the whistle to stop the clock to observe the spot of the ball to determine if Jacobs picked up the first down. The clock continued running during this time, although it shouldnt have been running, because they always stop the clock when the referees need to determine whether or not a play picked up a first down. They then reset the clock to where it was when Jacobs was tackled.

Re: Time(r) Was On Giants Side For Superbowl Win

OK, so I went back and watched what happened on my DVR...

Eli completes a pass to Amani Toomer with 8:24 remaining, and the clock stops, although it shouldn't.

When the play clock gets down to 8, the game clock starts counting down again. Three seconds pass, and Tom Coughlin calls over the referees, who blow the whistle to stop play and come over to the sidelines. They confer with Tom Coughlin about the clock being stopped, and realize their mistake. The referees then reset the play clock to 25 (which is what they always do when there is a referee's stoppage or coming out of a timeout) and let the game clock run down to 8:11, when they blow their whistle to resume play. Next time we see the play clock, it is at 17 seconds, with 8:05 remaining in the game. So, 23 seconds of play clock have elapsed, but only 19 seconds of game clock.

The Giants could have let the clock continue to run, but they chose to snap the ball three seconds later, at 8:02. In actuality, the game clock should have read 7:58. The mistake cost the Patriots 4 seconds. In a game that takes 3600 seconds to play, 4 seconds is pretty inconsequential.

I also went back to make sure that what happened at 1:28 also happened the way I remembered it. And yes, in fact, it did. Jacobs hits the ground with 1:31 and the referees run in to spot the ball and try to determine if it is a first down or not. The clock SHOULD be stopped, but it continues running for another 9 seconds, down to 1:22. The referees then spot the ball and signal for a first down. Fox goes to a replay, and there appears to be a long break in the action while the replay is shown. It is possible that during this time, the referee was asking to put some time back on the clock. Then they end the replay, and the referee still hasnt doen anything, and as soon as the clock is reset to 1:28, he moves out of the way and blows the whistle, signaling for the clock to begin running again
