Huh NFL allows cheaters

Quote:
Can someone explain why, if Clemens did use drugs, his entire career and reputation are thrown into question, while Harrison rides an unprecedented wave of victories to the Super Bowl with little more than a shrug?
Why is Bonds widely considered a fraud while Merriman is put on a pedestal every Sunday?
-Winnipeg Paper

Now I want your thoughts on this, why is it that it seems like Harrison/Merriman get free passes? Is it longevity?

Re: NFL allows cheaters

I think it comes down to records and/or chase of records. The media feels stupid for worshiping cheaters and writing a billion McGwire/Sosa stories so this is their way of getting them back. Lets face it, after the strike baseball had nothing going for them and it's the records which initially brought the fans and the media back.

Besides.. the NFL is teflon. Look at how bad the strories have to be (Vick, Pacman, etc.) to get coverage. Allen Iverson could get pulled over for a DUI or misdemeanor marijuana possession and we'd hear about it for a month.

Re: NFL allows cheaters

I also think it has to do with physical nature of football. I think they get more of a free pass because they are putting their bodies on the line every week. Baseball is more of a laid back sport where you dont have to worry about getting the shit kicked out of you.

Re: NFL allows cheaters

I think it's also because the NFL has a pretty thorough testing and treatent program in place, whereas baseball fought tooth and nail against testing for years.

It's like this: OK well, some NFL players get caught, but they know that there's a testing program in place and there and consequences. But MLB players not only cheated for years, but did everything they could to prevent the league from doing anything about it
