ESPN - Former Lions coordinator Martz hired to run 49ers offense - NFL
Ugh.. Can you say disappointed? How in the world are the Niners going to run a Martz offensive system where their running game with Gore is the strong point and all this guy wants to do is pass?
Eh...Depends on how everything goes in the FA and Draft, if the 49ers can pick up some decent to good WRs in the draft (take one in the second round and try to pick up a diamond in the rough in the later rounds) He might be a good fit. As of now....no.
I love Alex Smith but I guess the 49ers just don't fit him very well, they've got Sean Hill to look at next year and I guess we all know what the relationship with him and the coach is.

Nolan isn't exactly my favorite person in the world right now. they really should have won more games than they did this season and the offense.. my God it was horrendous. Plus, you don't screw with the franchise QB. You're supposed to be trying to develop him and giving him something that fits his style, moron.. not bickering.
Simon, this is what.. Smith's 4th OC since he's been drafted? How are you supposed to learn and grow into an offense when you're forced to learn everything over again every 2 seconds? Plus, nobody has ever given Smith anything to work with,. No receivers and a very blah playbook.
But dude, you can't really argue against the firing of Jim Hostler. It's obviously a shitty situation to have a 4th OC in four years, but it was unavoidable after the job Hostler did this season. You could even say the same after last summer, when they had to replace Turner so late in the offseason -- it was a shitty deal for everyone involved, but they didn't have many other choices.
As for the hiring, I'm not yet sure what to think. On one hand, Martz's scheme doesn't appear a good fit for the current personnel -- Alex Smith is not a Mike Martz quarterback, Frank Gore needs to actually get 20+ carries, etc. -- but on the other hand, he's one of the most celebrated offensive minds of the past decade. And the 49ers need that.
To be honest, I'd have rather the Niners signed Martz as the Head coach than the OC. I don't think he's the right fit with the current personnel.. definitely not.. but I'm also a little worried about a team stealing him away. Lets say two years go by and they start getting the right kinds of players in there and then Martz is offered a head coaching job which could definitely happen. What do the Niners do then? Start from scratch..again?
P.S. I realize Martz wasn't a great head coach in St. Louis, he makes some questionable decisions. Just saying. I don't want the Niners floating around changing their identity every couple years.
P.P.S. What I really think they could use is a hard nose coach like Bill Cowher. I'd die to make a run at him. They have the back. They have a solid o-line. They have an emerging Tight End. They have some decent players on defense. Go hit somebody in the mouth!
Personally, I'm a bit surprised the 49ers didn't hold out for Cam Cameron. The way he helped develop and utilize Tomlinson-Gates seems like an obvious best-case for Gore-Davis -- hell, Drew Brees even looked for a time like Smith has looked the past couple years. Of course, maybe they did approach him and he said no.
This whole business about shuffling coordinators has always seemed overblown to me -- that is, it's certainly something that can hinder the development of a player or a unit, but quite frankly it's often unavoidable. I don't really see how you could hire a candidate at offensive coordinator, for example, and ensure that he's not going to pursue a head coaching job down the road. I certainly wouldn't pass up a GOOD offensive coordinator simply for fear that he'd leave. Now, I understand that Martz is the kind of guy whose name will probably come up again for head coaching jobs down the line, but if the 49ers can get even two seasons out of him, and he can implement a scheme and make that offense work, it'll at least give them confidence.
