Maybe I'm thinking too hard

Ok, so after looking at Bears/'Phins games, I was dumbfounded. If I had guys like Devin Hester, or Ted Ginn, Jr, I'd be running them with slants, streaks, and the occasional drag route and maybe a screen. Yet when I was watching, Hester and Ginn were running Hooks, Corners, and Outs. Am I just looking to simply? I mean, I know I'm not an NFL Head Coach, but maybe I'm missing something, isn't this basically how Denny Green utilized Randy Moss?

Re: Maybe I'm thinking too hard

I don't know about Ginn but I had heard he's been a rather disappointment and is why the Phins don't draw up a lot of plays for him. Who knows. As far as Hester goes, I'm not sure how good he even is at WR.. I mean.. he has blazing speed and is the open field nobody is more dangerous, but I've seen him drop a few sure TDs this season while he was wide open.

I'm thinking Inside the Box, or they are? Would you do it that way? I mean I don't see a guy like Ginn being successful running hooks and corners where his speed will rarely get utilized...

Re: Maybe I'm thinking too hard

Sorry, i should have specified...i mean their coaches are using inside-the-box thinking...

They think that hooks and outs are what receivers are "supposed" to run. Most NFL coaches are set in their ways. They believe that an NFL offense is supposed to be run a certain way. They think inside the box. They might run a few "gadget plays" here or there to make people think they're creative and what not, but it's just a facade.

Yet, it's the innovators who end up being successful, like Bill Walsh, Bill Belichick, etc. Even though his team had a shitty year this year, I like Sean Payton too...I feel like he's not afraid to do things differently.

Re: Maybe I'm thinking too hard

That's what I thought. But wouldn't you think they'd see what Belichick is doing with Moss? From what I've seen, it's basically what I said they should do with Ginn/Hester. I mean they might have MORE speed than Moss. To me it seems so simple.

Like I said, Hester can't catch the ball. Give him new hands and I'll agree with you.

Re: Maybe I'm thinking too hard

On one hand, you're right -- both those guys are blazers, playmakers, guy who should get the ball running full speed.

But you also have to remember a few things: first, they're both still learning to play the position. This is Hester's first season playing WR since his early days at Miami, and Ginn is still a converted cornerback who came out early. You can really tell it when you watch Hester -- not only does he have pretty poor hands, like Blade said, but he runs the wrong route at least a couple times every game.

Second, look who's throwing them the ball. This week it was Kyle Orton and John Beck, neither of whom I would want throwing quick slants to the outside on a regular basis, especially not towards a hungry cornerback.

Last, to be honest, most of the balls I have seen thrown to Ginn and Hester have been screens and fly patterns, but I obvioiusly haven't been watching those teams every week.
