Is Charlie Weis That Bad?

Before I get started I'm aware of how bad he did at Notre Dame this season, but what gets lost in that is how well he has set up Notre Dame for the next 3 years already. Just look at his 2008 Recruit class (which I may add is the #1 in the nation at the moment)

Quote:

Numbers Next To There Name Are There National Ranks In There Postions

Five Star Recruits

TE Kyle Rudolph (#1)
DT Omar Hunter (#2)
QB Dayne Crist (#3)
DE Ethan Johnson (#4)
WR Michael Floyd (#8)

Four Star Recruits

MLB Steve Filer (#4)
OG Trevor Robinson (#6)
MLB Anthony McDonald (#6)
OG Lane Clelland (#7)
SLB Darius Flemming (#7)
S Dan McCarthy (#9)
S Jamoris Slaughter (#10)
CB Robert Blanton (#10)
TE Joesph Fuaria (#12)
DT Sean Cwynar (#15)
RB Jonas Gray (#17)
WR John Goodman (#30)

Three Star Recruits

C Braxston Cave (#5)
DT Brandon Newman (#24)
OG Michael Golic (#25)
WLB David Posluszny (#26)
DT Hafis Williams (#34)
Hes addressed pretty much any hole that Notre Dame had this season and any up coming holes (TE, WR, RB). Danye Crist has already stated that hes okay with sitting behind Jimmy Clausen for 2 Years so we won't have to start a Freshman QB when Clausen leaves.

Ty Willingham left ND is shambles, Wies is going to rebuild the heck out of the football in the school in a year or two once he gets the guys he wants.

Re: Is Charlie Wies That Bad?

Didn't Weis just lose a bunch of games with his own recruits? My point is.. even though you get them in there, you still have to coach them.

Re: Is Charlie Wies That Bad?

5-star recruit means nothing...

Laurence Maroney was a 3-star recruit
Marion Barber was a 2-star recruit
Travis Beckum was a 2-star DEFENSIVE END
I can go on and on, but that's not the point, the point is, it's far too early to judge Weis, if he's still losing in 2 years, then yeah he might be a bad coach. But he just showed this year, what telling your coach he's gonna be fired in midseason does.

Re: Is Charlie Weis That Bad?

Yeah but how many of those were freshmen starters? Admitedly Wies made some bone head moves when it came to who to start sometimes. But its not the same as having Clausen be two years older and come off the bench after learning from Brady Quinn for a couple years or having a senior Offensive line group that worked well together to teach the newbies that started this year.

He had to start three new guys in the oline a freshman QB and none of the WRs were stellar until Tate started making some waves at the end of the season. I'd actually say the Defense is a solid D but they were left on the field way to long to be effective.

Re: Is Charlie Weis That Bad?

Wasn't Brady Quinn Tyrone's guy? It could be argued that Weis won with Tyrone's players and hasn't won with his own.. Hey, maybe Weis can't develop young kids.. maybe he belongs back in the NFL where he can just call the plays with proven players. Who knows. Still too early to tell me thinks.

Re: Is Charlie Weis That Bad?

I suppose, I think at the very least that at least shows Wies knows whats wrong with his team and is trying to fix it. Compare last years class to this year and I really don't think anyone in that class had the talent to start as a freshman especially on the Offensive Line. They were way to raw and got over powered in almost every game.
He got Crist who from everything I've seen is stronger and faster then Clausen who also gets the pleasure of fine tuning his game unlike Clausen.

I don't entirely disagree with his judging his coaching till he gets a few years in with only his players. But this class so far is an improvement upon last years.

No kidding. Weis came in and led Notre Dame's "resurgence" with players recruited by Willingham, and when it came time to win with his own, Weis failed miserably. It's ludicrous to say Willingham left the team in any kind of "shambles."

Also, Notre Dame always has the best recruiting classes; this one doesn't even stand out compared with others.

Who did Ty get that was worth anything in his last recruit class? Out side Darius Walker and Terrail Lambert nobody from that class has done anything to warrent saying he didn't leave that school with dick all to build on after he left. He left a good team with a bad O line, zero depth at everywhere but Runningback and people are suprised that after 3 Senior guys on the Oline, Quinn, McKnight, Walker and Samardzija left all in the same year they've done poorly?

Considering they always have top recruiting classes, his last one was horrible and didn't even crack the top 20 in the nation.
