The saga of Carl Pavano has taken another comic turn.
As was reported last week, the Yankees want to release Pavano, pay off the remainder of his contract and re-sign him to a minor-league deal. The belief is that the Yankees need Pavano in the organization for insurance purposes.
Here is what Pavano was offered on Monday: We’ll cut you a check for $12.95 million to pay you off, you stay with the organization and can rehab your elbow injury in Tampa.
Here is what Pavano told The Hartford Courant: “I’d be giving up a lot of options if I signed a minor league deal.â€
There is little chance that Pavano will pitch in 2008 as he won’t be ready to return from Tommy John Surgery until sometime in the summer. The odds that he gets himself ready to pitch in the majors are off the charts.
The Yankees need the roster space now and appealed to Pavano to do the right thing. That he is balking somes as no surprise given his history. Pavano is now with his fourth agent, a nice guy named Tom O’Connell. Perhaps he can convince The Rajah of Rehab to help the Yankees out.
He never helped them on the field. At least now he can take a dive and allow them to keep some young player who could actually amount to something.
It’s still hard to believe this clown was the Opening Day starter.
