Batter Do you support a salary cap in MLB?

I think we have discussed this a little but thought it wouldnt hurt to bring it up again.

So whats ur opinion on having a salary cap in baseball?

Would it be a good thing? Would it help out?

Would it hurt baseball?

I am a fan of a small market team (the texas rangers) so I would for sure support it.

I imagine ny and boston fans would not support it lol.

Re: Do you support a salary cap in MLB?

Despite the fact that it would hurt my favorite team more than any other, I am in favor of a salary cap.

It is fair, and it's for the good of the league overall. Wellington Mara (the former owner of the NY football Giants) realized this, and that was why he was such a vocal advocate for the NFL's communist economic policy. He realized that the greater the number of competitive teams and the higher the quality of play, the better the league would do overall.

Under the old system, a few rich owners like him could take a bigger slice of the pie, but with the new system, they take the same sized slice as everyone else, but the pie is much bigger.

Baseball could use a similar system

Re: Do you support a salary cap in MLB?

And plus you wouldnt have people like A-Rod making as much money as he is. Not faulting the guy for getting paid, most people would take the money, im just saying.

You will have teams like the brewers and the rockies of this year make a run, but very few. For the most part, we already know next year that the red sox and prolly the yankees will be in the playoffs. The Rays? no way, the rangers, haha, I just think it would be much more entertaining for everybody if there was a cap so its all even.

Re: Do you support a salary cap in MLB?

I was reading an article on baseball prospects yesterday about each team's offseason plans, and the guy mentioned that the D-Rays could be a serious contender in about 2-3 years.

Their combination of major league hitters and minor leaguers ready to get called up is pretty impressive. Crawford, Upton, Delmon Young, and Carlos Pena are all fantastic hitters. Their 3rd base prospect, Evan Longoria (yes thats his real name) is one of the top-ranked prospects in all of baseball. They have two legitimately good starters in Kazmir and James Shields, and they've drafted a few stud pitchers since then.

They really could have a big turnaround in a few years...

ya i read something where they were predicted to win the series in 2010 lol. Who knows. I think they would for sure if they were in the national L.

They are getting a name and color change this year. They will be The Tampa Bay Rays, and they will be blue with a touch of gold. Maybe that will bring them some more luck lol.

Re: Do you support a salary cap in MLB?

Evan Longoria is a fucking stud in the making. He's basically the same player as Troy Tulowitzki. Jeff Niemann might finally be ready to be the stud he's supposed to be. Along with Reid Brignac at SS. The Rays have a bright future in the field, they just need some pitching to supplement the hitting.

Re: Do you support a salary cap in MLB?

I would support a salary cap in baseball (around $150M) but I would also like a floor (around $65M). I'd still keep a luxury tax however for teams over $110M.

Re: Do you support a salary cap in MLB?

I agree that there should be a floor as well. In fact, I think that with the revenue sharing that takes place today, it's ridiculous that there's no floor. So, perpetually terrible teams like the Pirates get like $20 million a year from the Yankees, and then the owner pockets it instead of paying players.

I think perhaps you could make the floor tied to the revenues of the team. For instance, at a floor of 50%, the minimum total salary would be half of the previous year's ticket sales, parking, concessions, merchandise, tv and radio revenue, and stadium advertising.

That would then leave 50% or so for other expenses (stadium maintenance, paying the coaching staff and excutives, other miscellaneous expenses), and profit for the owners.

Plus, the teams would have to be audited yearly by an independent accounting firm, to determine what their salary floor will be for the next year.

And, if a team falls under the floor, each player on the roster gets a proportional increase in salary, in order to bring the total payroll up above the floor

Thoughts?
