You be the GM: Part 2

Rumors are already floating around about the Red Sox and Twins making a offseason trade involving one Johan Santana.

The Twins seem pretty set on moving him based on his salary looking to skyrocket to 20+ million a year and they are notoriously cheap when it comes to paying out.

The offer rumored out there is Jon Lester, Clay Bucholtz and Coco Crisp for Santana.

So are the Sox better off with two young pitchers under 25 locked up for the next 5+ years at low salaries who have the potential to be the next Barry Zito and Tim Hudson respectively or do they pair Johan Santana with Josh Beckett and hit the MLB with the best 1-2 punch in baseball? Coco is totally expendable and irrelevant in any deal due to Jacoby Ellsbury.

You decide

I've said it before, I'll say it again, When Santana and Hunter both leave, it will be a sad day. And it's hard to come up with money you don't have, so I wouldn't call them cheap. Considering pretty much every player is overpaid anyway.

I think this Red Sox team has to live in the now, and capitalize on their current team, and win as many championships as they can right away..

Re: You be the GM: Part 2

I'd like to see a starting five of

Josh Beckett
Johan Santana
Daisuke Matsuzaka
then the pieces will fall here. Hopefully Schilling for one more year
and a solid number 5 who can play decent..

I disagree...i was always uncomfortable witht he notion that a team has a "window" to win championships...I think that smart planning and organizational management can lead to basically never-ending success.

All you have to do is continue to develop youngsters, and as your stars age and lose effectiveness, replace them with up-and-comers from the farm system.

So, for instance, the Red Sox may lose Schilling, Wakefield, and Lowell, who have been very valuable to the team's recent success, but they have youngsters like Bucholz, Lester, Ellsbury, Pedroia, Papelbon, etc to fill in. In a few years, Manny and Varitek will probably be gone, but if the organization plans for it, there will be youngsters coming up to make up for those lost contributions. Not necessarily at the exact same positions or the exact same skill set, but just as far as overall ocntributions to the team are considered.

That being said, Johan Santana is the best pitcher in baseball...if there's anybody that you would give up two potential stud pitchers for, it's him.

Re: You be the GM: Part 2

Bucholtz and Lester are good. But it has nothing to do with the players. I really hate the no continuity thing that's going on. The Twins had an excellent thing going, with two young studs, Justin Morneau and Joe Mauer, a wiley veteran in Torii Hunter, pitching they have Johan Santana leading with youngsters Glen Perkins, Matt Garza, Kevin Slowey, etc. I don't think you know how good those kids are. It'd be terrible in the fact that the Twins are loaded with pitching throughout their system. Oswaldo Sosa has looked good in AA. So basically this would be a terrible trade because THE TWINS DON'T NEED MORE PITCHING. The fact that it's even being considered is terrible. They need to replace guys like Nick Punto at 3rd, and Rondell White in Left. Not more pitching. Basically it's just going to be like always. The Rich get Richer, the Poor get Poorer. sigh.

Re: You be the GM: Part 2

I wouldn't do it. Johan Santana is the best pitcher in baseball but if you trade for him you have nobody after him and Beckett with Dice-K thrown in. So then if one of the big two goes down with an injury your pitching staff is crippled. I like taking my chances with the youngsters and signing a mid-level free agent if Schilling leaves..

Re: You be the GM: Part 2

The whole "The Rich Get Richer" mentality really bugs the shit out of me.

All it takes is the right owner, a good GM and a baseball town to suceed.

Ever hear of revenue sharing? You do realize that the Twins owner is one of the richest owners in all of sports right? He is just too fucking cheap to spend any of his own money to make more money.

Boston is constantly considered a 'large market' team but yet their city population is like 300,000 and we are in the smallest ballpark in America with the highest prices.

Its all about supply and demand.

Just think.....The Toronto Bluejays could have been the 90's version of the New York Yankees, but they were too cheap and stupid to keep their own talent and build build build while the SkyDome was selling out all those years.

Dont blame anyone but the owner and the people that live in the city.
