HEMPSTEAD, N.Y. -- Chad Pennington's tenure as the New York Jets' starting quarterback is over.
Coach Eric Mangini announced Monday he's going with Kellen Clemens as his starter for Sunday's game against Washington. It's a move fans and media have been suggesting for weeks as the Jets have struggled to a 1-7 start.
"I made this decision not based on singling out Chad for where we are, but based on the fact that I think Kellen has earned this opportunity," Mangini said. "I want to give him this opportunity. It's in no way an indication that Chad is solely responsible. We all are."
Clemens, in his second season out of Oregon, replaced an ineffective Pennington late in the Jets' 13-3 loss to Buffalo on Sunday. His entrance was cheered by those remaining at Giants Stadium. He was just 5-of-12 for 67 yards and two interceptions, but one of those came on a desperation toss as time expired.

After waiting until last Wednesday to keep Pennington as the starter, Mangini didn't need the extra time to make his choice this week.
Clemens has a much stronger arm than Pennington and is more mobile, perhaps able to add a few more elements to the offense than the veteran could. Although Mangini wouldn't commit to Clemens beyond this weekend, the 2006 second-round pick will be under center Sunday against Washington for his second NFL start.

Maybe Clemens will breathe new life into the Jets though, Sometimes a simple QB change is all it takes

I mean it's not a knock on Pennington, but sometimes it's true, all you need is a change at QB and a team can instantaneously get better.

What constitues improvement then? Because at 1-7, it'd be hard for the Jets not to improve over the rest of the season.

I'm excited to see what Clemmens can do.

Chad Pennington is washed up. His offense has two good-to-great receivers, two solid running backs, and a serviceable tight end. Most of the O-line is decent as well.


For the good of the franchise, they had to make the change.

I know it' hard to accept because he's from W. Virginia Dak, but it's the truth.

He is not from W.V., he just played his College days here.

I still believe that Penningtion can be a great QB in the NFL. I would like to see the Jets trade him to someone who will use him

I don't know any one who thought Moss was washed up...

They just thought he was a lazy ass who had no passion or consideration for the teams he played on.

Pennington's body is falling apart it would seem.

I mean Pennington's had two shoulder surgeries, that right there, is a HUGE red flag for any team. And considering his age, I'd rather go with an unproven Andre Woodson, Jr, Brian Brohm, Matt Ryan, John David Booty over him because I know they will be able to lead the team for a lot of years if they succeed.
