AL MVP: Alex Rodriguez This is probably the most obvious of all the awards. A-Rod has been absolutely ridiculous this year. He is 14th in the AL in batting average, 4th in OBP, 1st in slugging, 2nd in OPS (to Ortiz). First in HRs (20% higher than the next guy), RBIs (11% higher than #2), Runs scored (16% better than #2), and total bases (6% more than Magglio). 7th in walks. 2nd in hit by pitches. 12th in stolen bases, 6th in stolen base %.

As for the sabermetric stats, he leads in

. Click on each of the stats to get a definition...

Runners-up: Magglio Ordonez, David Ortiz

AL Cy Young: CC Sabathia This was really really really close, but I have to give a slight nod to Sabathia here. He's 5th in the AL in ERA (Beckett is 6th), he hasnt missed a start this season (he's made 3 more starts than Beckett), he leads the AL in innings pitched (34 more than Beckett), he's 4th in Ks (Beckett is 6th), and he's only walked 36 batters, which is ridiculous (Beckett has walked 40, which is also excellent). Sabathia is slightly ahead of Beckett in WHIP. The only stat that Beckett leads Sabathia in is Wins, and you guys should know by now that I think wins and losses is a stupid stat.

Sabathia is second among AL pitchers in VORP (Beckett is 3rd), 3rd in a crazy stat called SNLVAR (which estimates team wins in the pitcher's starts, assuming each pitcher had the same run support and bullpen support...Beckett is 6th), 1st in Win Shares, and 3rd in win probability added (Beckett is 5th)

One other thing...potential base-stealers stole at a 70% success rate against Beckett, but only 47% against Sabathia.

It's close, but I gotta go with Sabathia.

Runners-up: Josh Beckett, Fausto Carmona

I'll be back with the other 4 awards later...it's breakfast time

Re: Nominations for Monks Baseball End Of The Year Award

AL MVP - A-Rod. I'm not giving an explanation, sorry. This is a given. The only other guy even REMOTELY close is Magglio Ordonez. But sorry, it goes to the Yank's "Hot Corner".

NL MVP - Prince Fielder 50 HR, .394 OBP, and in the home stretch here (Sept) he's hitting .354 with 11 dingers and 22 batted in. He is helping to keep the Brewers alive.

AL Cy Young - Josh Beckett Nothing that hasn't been said already above. One of the tops in ERA and WHIP, and let's not forget about those 20 wins.

NL Cy Young - Jake Peavy Another lock in my opinion. 18 Wins, 2.30 ERA or so...wow. Simply amazing. Leads the leagues in K's with 233 or so...it's a given here.

NL Rookie of the Year: Troy Tulowitzki Sorry, can't give it to Braun here. His horrible fielding percentage (worst in the league at .900 or so) is part of what makes up Rookie of the Year in my mind. Troy is .292, 22, 91. A great start for this young guy. And a fielding percentage of .980 or so, which is tops for Shortstops (not an easy feat for a rookie to accomplish)

AL Rookie of the Year: Delmon Young A .363 average with runners in scoring position is a great feat. Usually rookies can crumble under that kind of pressure, but Delmon always steps it up. Not to mention a nice chunk of SB and his glove, and he is great on both sides of the field.

Re: Nominations for Monks Baseball End Of The Year Award

I almost went with troy tulowitzki of the Rockies for the NL Rookie of the Year. The stats aren't quite as good as braun in the hitting department but they are still very good and troy plays SS.

Yeah, it was supposed to be .292. Typo on my part. Thanks.

Re: Nominations for Monks Baseball End Of The Year Award

AL Rookie of the Year: Dustin Pedroia I actually dont even think it's close. Young is at .289/.317/.409, while Pedroia is at .317/.380/.441

Plus, Pedroia plays a premium defensive position, while Young plays the easiest/most replaceable position. Also, Pedroia ranks as an above-average defender, while Young has a below average score according to baseball prospectus's Fielding Runs Above Average stat. Take a look at Young's numbers again. He did not play nearly as well as people thought he did this year.

Also, Pedroia leads all AL rookies in VORP, by a wide margin, as well as Win Shares and Win probability added
