Alright, so on my way to work I was listning to Mike & Mike in the Morning, and one of the topics was who is America's Team?
For football, is it still the cowboys? Ya sure they were for sure in the 90's, but they havnt won a playoff game in forever. Would you still consider them to be? I would. I think Dallas is one of the only teams where it doesnt matter where you live, or where you go there are always fans of that team in that city. I live in Tampa and let me tell you, I see A LOT of Dallas jerseys. The cowboys always get the best rating on tv and they play in prime time more then any other football team. If not the cowboys, then who?
Other possible candidates:
Steelers - 5 Super Bowl wins, good fan base, long history.
Packers - Long long history, I seem to see a lot of green bay fans every where I go also.
Other then them, that is all I can think of that even comes close.
What do you think?
For Baseball is it the New York Yankees? I think I heard on the show they were saying the Red Sox are 1st in ticket sales. So is it the Sox now?
I think it is still the Yankees. You go all around the world and can see a Yankee hat. You either love them or you hate them.
So to sum this up for me,
America's Team for...
Football: Dallas Cowboys
Baseball: New York Yankees

For football, there is no way I would say Dallas. I don't know if there really is a "team" for all America. Dallas is the home of Owens, who I would have to say isn't liked by the majority of America. For a while it was the Raiders (longer ago), but for America's team NOW?
I guess the only team I could come up with would be the Colts. A lot of people like Manning, and respect him for his exceptional work behind the center. He's an all-around nice guy, and doesn't really ruffle many feathers. I know it's not just 1 guy who would make "America's Team", but typically the QB is the face of a team. His receiving core is well respected, with an enormous amount of talent. I think the fact that they "FINALLY" won the big one last year has granted them even more fans.
For baseball? Have to agree with Slim in that it's the Yankees. Maybe it's an American League thing, but a lot of people around here in Detroit HATE the team. Even though I think the Yankees are a "love 'em or hate 'em" team, they are the most well known. A-Rod, Jeter, Clemens, heck even Steinbrenner are well known figures in the country. Plus, as much as I know many people who hate the Yankees....here in Detroit I would say the second most popular jersey behind the Tigers would be NYY.
To sum it up:
Football = Colts
Baseball = Yankees
Also, another point. When considering "America's Team", you really have to think of the big market cities in the country. Obviously a small market team like the Kansas City Royals wouldn't be a logical pick. The more "glitzy" towns where the sport is played gives that team a better chance. So I'm talking about teams in the New York, California, Texas, etc markets. Whether or not Indy contradicts my claim, I don't care. I still pick Indy.
America's Team: The Packers, I have yet to meet a person who doesn't respect the history or Favre
America's Baseball Team: The Cubbies, the loveable losers have more fans then I know. Plus the Cubs are widely tolerated unlike the Yankees who by some people are just flat hated

wait are you saying Magic Johnson is black, has AIDS and has it better than ME?
I would say it's too close to call in football. The monster teams in football all have incredible fanbases and you meet fans of those teams all over the states.
In baseball, it's either the Sox or Yankees and right now the Sox have the most traveling attendence.. that is.. the difference of a home team's normal attendence compared to that when the Sox are in the building.. so I say it's the Sox but the Yanks are right there.

No doubt the Sox in my opinion
Like Blade mentioned. The traveling fans. I literally have to wait sometimes if listening on the radio to see where they are playing because I can't tell due to all the "Lets go Red Sox" chants. Many players from many teams have stated just how annoying it is to hear their own fans get outcheered by 30% of Sox fans.
Also, many many kids go to college in Boston. When they leave they take the Sox love with them.
As far as football goes? Its really tough. Its DEFINETLY NOT the Patriots. They seem to only be liked by the New England area. For this one I would still have to go with the Cowboys as well.

The thing that people should know about the Red Sox love is that it stretches all the way to Maine. If you go anywhere from eastern CT-RI up through Vermont, New Hampshire, etc.. it's Red Sox nation. Then you watch the Red Sox play in tampa and it's all sox fans.. you watch them play in Baltimore.. it's at least 30% sox fans or more and they are LOUD.. you watch them play in Oakland, same thing..
I'm not trying to discredit the love for the Yanks, they have crazy amounts of fans everywhere. Like I said, it's close.
Football.. The Cowboys are an obvious pick, but I would say the Dolphins, Raiders, Steelers, Niners, Redskins, etc.. are all pretty equal in fanbase around these parts..
Though where I live I see 70% Pats, 20% Giants, 5% Jets, and then everything else.
You also gotta remember that the NY Yankee hat is a fashionable item. In the UK i would guess that 10% of all NY Yankee hat owners have an idea what baseball is and could name 1 player on the roster.

AMERICA'S Team, I believe this is in reference to the United States of America
