Batter What's bigger: 500 HR's or 3,000 hits?

What landmark is more prestigious? 21 Players have hit 500 home runs, and 27 have the 3,000 hits.

Six of the 21 members of the 500 club have reached that level in recent years (the steroids era). And there are a lot of players in reach of it right now.

As for the hits, there are only a select few even in reach, jeter, a-rod, but there really are not very many players in a close reach to it.

What means more?

Re: What's bigger: 500 HR's or 3,000 hits?

3,000 hits to me is basically a guy that hit well enough to hang around but not necessarily for average.. Pete Rose for example does not have that great of an average for a guy with over 4,000 hits. The all-time hit king.

Steroids or not, 500 home runs is 500 home runs. I don't see too many guys hanging around to get 500... You either have a lot of power or you don't.

I guess I'm trying to say that 3,000 hits is more misleading.. Biggio is another guy that in my opinion was never a GREAT player.. just good.

The debate over how easy it is to hit a home run these days is a different argument.

Re: What's bigger: 500 HR's or 3,000 hits?

see, i just can not see biggio as not a GREAT player. I think he has always been a really great player, but for some reason we dont think about biggio and that is mis leading cause you then label him as not a GREAt player...

lol i hope i didnt confuse you

Re: What's bigger: 500 HR's or 3,000 hits?

yeah I see your point. I still consider him one of the best 2nd baseman ever though.

But still, I think the 3,000 hits means more. Seems like 15 years from now, a player hitting 500 homers will be nothing new...

600 Homeruns is more amazing imo, Also, 100 steals in a season, it's saddening how much they don't run like they used to

Re: What's bigger: 500 HR's or 3,000 hits?

SS, look at most of the single season top stolen base guys. They are generally on shitty teams. No reason to stop them, they won't score anyway was the general feeling.

Also, Biggio would be the first player sans Rose that hit over 3000 hits and didnt make the HOF if he doesnt get in.

I don't see him as a HOF'er, but it is quite impressive that he has played catcher, 2nd, CF all very well in his career. Thats nothing to sneeze at. Not to mention he played his whole career in Houston which is a nice touch. Overall he just doesnt do it for me.

I will go with 3000 hits though for which is tougher.

Re: What's bigger: 500 HR's or 3,000 hits?

To put this question in perspective, which is easier 3,000 shouts or 500 posts?
Answer: it depends, I don't post a lot, so therefore I have almost 500 posts but I shout a lot. I mean it's easier for a guy like Frank Thomas to hit 500 Homeruns than it would be for him to get 3,000 hits. It'd be easier for Jason Tyner to get 3,000 hits than it would be to get 500 homeruns

Re: What's bigger: 500 HR's or 3,000 hits?

They are both meaningful, but 3,000 hits is far more meaningful in my book. Why? Simply because baseball is not played like it was back in the day and a playing hitting a homerun today isn't that bad. So seeing someone hit 500 homeruns is one hell of a accomplishment but on the other hand seeing someone being able to get 3,000 is just remarkable and unbelievable because hell the pitching is much better now a days and it's harder to get 2+ plus hits a game.

Re: What's bigger: 500 HR's or 3,000 hits?

I still think 3,000 is very misleading for the reasons I mentioned.. Pete Rose's carrer average is only .303!!
