Real chief wants Beckham to stay

Real Madrid president Ramon Calderon is said to be ready to try and convince LA Galaxy-bound David Beckham to change his mind and stay at the Bernabeu.

Beckham, 32, is due to join the MLS club when his Real contract expires at the end of June.

Calderon has hinted there is a clause in the England midfielder's contract which could allow them to keep him.

Calderon told Marca newspaper: "We need to sit down with him, his representatives and decide between us."

Real reacted sharply to Beckham's rejection of their contract offer in January.

Coach Fabio Capello said Beckham would never play for the first-team again.

Calderon was even more scathing, saying Beckham: "Will be an average cinema actor living in Hollywood."

The Real president also claimed: "The proof our technical team was right in not considering his continuity has been ratified as nobody wanted him."

But Beckham's attitude impressed Capello enough to win back his first-team place, and the England midfielder has been inspirational as Real have put themselves in pole position to win the Spanish title.

In the meantime, Beckham has also won back his place in the England team, after his international career appeared to have ended following England's exit from last year's World Cup.

Having chastised Beckham for his decision in January, Calderon is reportedly extending an olive branch to the England midfielder.

The Real president said: "There was a bit of anger by the premature announcement of his exit, but we are now going to make an effort for him to stay.

"I would be delighted if he remained at the club."
