Football Where will Daunte Culpepper Play?

DAVIE, Fla. -- Daunte Culpepper apparently won't be getting a chance to compete with Trent Green for the starting quarterback job in Miami.

One day after agreeing to send a fifth-round draft pick to the Kansas City Chiefs for Green, the Dolphins told Culpepper on Wednesday they want to trade him -- a move he is resisting.

Culpepper said he was told at a morning meeting with general manager Randy Mueller and coach Cam Cameron that the Dolphins "are going in a different direction at the QB position."

"They would like to trade me in order to 'get something for me,"' Culpepper, who serves as his own agent, wrote in an e-mail. "However, it is my position that I have already been down that road and I am not interested in being traded."

Green is expected to undergo a physical in South Florida on Wednesday. If he passes it, the long-awaited deal between the Dolphins and Chiefs will be completed, a person within the NFL with knowledge of the deal told The Associated Press on Tuesday night. The person requested not to be identified because the deal is not official.

Neither team confirmed the trade Tuesday. Green's agent, Jim Steiner, did not return messages seeking comment.

Clayton: Miami paid up

With camp coming up and their quarterback situation not to their liking, the Dolphins finally decided to pony up and give the Chiefs basically what they wanted for Trent Green, John Clayton writes. Story
• Scouts: Don't expect much

If the move happens, the 36-year-old Green would likely be with the Dolphins when they open a three-day minicamp on Friday.

Culpepper -- who is due to make $5.5 million this season -- played in only four games a year ago because of knee problems and is still trying to recover from major surgery in 2005. He also intended to take part in this weekend's minicamp, after receiving clearance from orthopedic surgeon Dr. James Andrews to resume football activity earlier this week.

"They have told me throughout the offseason that I am under contract to the Dolphins," Culpepper wrote. "Therefore, it will be up to them to either keep me under contract or release me. In the meantime I will continue to work out at the facility with the team and prepare myself for training camp, wherever it may be."

In 5½ seasons as Kansas City's starter, Green threw for 21,459 yards -- an average of 244 per game -- and 118 touchdowns while completing 62 percent of his passes. He missed eight games last season because of a concussion suffered in the season opener, and didn't believe he'd have a chance to fairly compete with Brodie Croyle and Damon Huard for the starting job in KC in 2007.

So he wanted a trade and worked out a new contract several weeks ago with the Dolphins, who traded for Culpepper before the 2006 season.

"It's unfortunate the way things turned out for Daunte," running back Ronnie Brown told Sirius NFL Radio on Tuesday night.

Miami also drafted a quarterback this year. Brigham Young's John Beck was chosen in the second round after passing on a chance to take Notre Dame's Brady Quinn with the ninth overall pick -- which the Dolphins used on receiver-returner Ted Ginn Jr. of Ohio State.

Culpepper's health almost certainly was a major factor why Miami spent weeks trying to coax Kansas City into trading Green, who would have made $7.2 million this season with the Chiefs. The Dolphins offered the Chiefs a sixth-round pick long before April's draft, while Kansas City reportedly insisted on a fourth-round selection.

"My position on Trent is that the Dolphins should get the best players that they can and let them compete for the starting job," Culpepper said Tuesday after learning of the reported trade.

Green and Cameron have a long relationship. Both are former Indiana quarterbacks, and Cameron was Washington Redskins quarterbacks coach when Green was a third-stringer there in 1995 and 1996.

Re: Where will Daunte Culpepper Play?

I can't really think of a team that would need him as a starting QB... Maybe Oakland untill The # 1 pick is ready, Maybe back to Minnesota? Looks like he will be picked up of course but be a second string qb.

Re: Where will Daunte Culpepper Play?

There are a couple teams... one being Detroit. They have Kitna, but he isn't proven like Culpepper... and I think they would love having someone like him to throw to CJ

Re: Where will Daunte Culpepper Play?

I wouldn't say Kitna is not proven, the guy had a 4,000 yard season last year and has been a solid performer for years.

In all fairness I think Miami are making a mistake here, Trent Green had an awful season last year and he is 36 years old, another hit like the one he took on opening day last year and he's done IMO. Culpepper on the other hand is 30 and when fit he was an elite quarterback, last season is harsh to judge because the guys knee was well fucked.

As for where he'll go, well McCown/Walter will start in Oakland so he won't go there IMO, Detiot will stick with Kitna, MInnesota is a possibility but the team where I reckon he will end up in either Washington, Baltimore or from left field here, the Bears.

Re: Where will Daunte Culpepper Play?

It's a great question, and I have no answer. I still don't think his knee checks out in time to start anywhere on opening day, but some team will have a roster spot for him.

Immediately, I would disqualify Detroit. There is a very particular type of quarterback Mike Martz likes to employ, and Culpepper is about the exact opposite.

Washington is the type of team that used to be all over a situation like this, but if Snyder/Gibbs are smart, they'll forget about it right now. The last thing Jason Campbell needs is yet another veteran quarterback standing in his way.

Baltimore already has Steve McNair, and I still think they give Boller another year or two. The third roster spot is Troy Smith's.

Oakland almost seems to make the most sense, but for some reason, I don't see it happening. They like McCown a lot, they're not ready to dump Walter, and then there's obviously Russell. There's no room.

Chicago seems pretty happy with Griese as the veteran backup to push Grossman, but it wouldn't surprise me if they showed interest. Knowing a lot about Culpepper, having played him over a dozen times in the division, they'll either be really high or really low on him.

Cleveland is another team I wouldn't be surprised to read about in the coming weeks. A Brady Quinn holdout has been rumoured, and the Browns have no solid third quarterback after Charlie Frye.

Finally, there's Minnesota. A week ago, I would have said no chance in hell. But from all accounts of their latest minicamp, Tarvaris Jackson is having a lot of trouble with the offense, and hasn't looked comfortable throwing the ball at all. The backup is Brooks Bollinger. If Culpepper wants to come back to Minnesota, and that's a huge IF, I could see it happening.

Re: Where will Daunte Culpepper Play?

OUtside of the teams given (I still think there is a chance in Detroit), if the Bills are looking for insurance behind JP Losman it is a possiblity... but the last I hear they were pretty solid behind having him as thei franchise guy. I don't think Dante will be happy as a back-up wherever he ends up. HE could always end up in Kansas City if the price is right as well.

Re: Where will Daunte Culpepper Play?

the only teams that i can think of that could possible use him are...

the jets, Chiefs, Raiders, bears, vikings, maybe rams and maybe seattle..

now he would still be 2nd string for prolly all of those, but those are the teams that could prolly use him the most.

Buffalo's a team I hadn't thought of, but they've already got three quarterbacks who fit roles on the team. Losman is the clear starter after progressing well in 2006, Craig Nall is a solid veteran backup, and they used a 3rd-rounder on Trent Edwards this offseason.

I don't think Kansas City makes sense either. If the Chiefs wanted an injury-prone veteran around, they would have kept Green for sure; otherwise, Brodie Croyle will be given every chance to start, and Damon Huard makes for an excellent veteran backup.

Re: Where will Daunte Culpepper Play?

Chyeah the seahawks already have two pretty good QB there in Matt and Seneca, I doubt that Daunte will be going there. I can only really see afew teams actively going after him at this point in the off season. 1 being the Lions who could use someone like Culpepper throwing the ball to Calvin like Griff said and the other being sort of a long shot in Houston.
