Rugby League: Jones Signs New Dragons Deal

Jones Signs New Dragons Deal

New Zealand Test scrum-half Stacey Jones has handed Catalans Dragons a major boost by signing a new one-year deal with the Super League side.

Jones is a legend in the game and in agreeing to a third year with the French side has given them a massive boost as they try to become a Super League force.

The 30-year-old has become a talismanic figure for the Dragons after joining them following over a decade with Auckland Warriors.

Jones was out-of-contract at the end of the current season but says he was loving his life and rugby so much in Perpignan that he had no thoughts of leaving.

"I am very happy to be Catalan in 2008 because it will be a crucial season for the future of the club," said Jones.

"My family is very happy in Perpignan, the supporters are great and remind me of those of Auckland.

"Furthermore, I love working with (coach) Mick Potter and really there was no reason for me not remain one more year in France.

"We have quite a lot of injured players this season but I am confident that, when we have our players back, we will make the play-offs."

Catalans general manager Christophe Levy believes Jones is still the best in his position in the world and the move would help the club attract more big-name stars.

"Stacey Jones is the best scrum-half in the world and his decision to stay is further proof of the vitality of our club and our capacity to attract and keep the best players in the world,” said Levy.

"Stacey was never disappointed by our club and the extension of the contract until 2008 is evidence that everybody trusts our adventure."

This is excellent news for the Dragons but I can't help thinking that a player of Jones' calibre should be at a bigger club.
