It's ridiculous that there's such a stiff penalty for smoking pot, when the effects are so minimally different from consuming alcohol (a totally accepted practice in all major sports). The guy made enough money to retire on in his first season in the NFL, and everything he's doing in his own personal off-season (ie. studying holistic medicine, exploring foreign landscapes, etc.) is only adding positive things to his personal character, while adding very, very little "baggage" to his personal career -- I just can't believe the NFL is so opposed to this kind of naturopathy. Or, I mean obviously I can believe it -- I just disagree with it.
They have can't players going around and breaking laws without being punished.

Until it is legal in the U.S. they cannot, and should not allow it.

Re: Ricky Williams Fails Marijuana Test Again

Thats why he should go back to playing for the Argos when he can. Aside from the lack of testing up here (besides steriods ), He has an easier time playing football up there because people treat him normaly insted of like a star player. Which is one of the reasons alot of people point out for him smoking pot and doing other drugs.

From any accounts of heard of people meeting Ricky or atleast interviewing him he seems like a normal guy whos pretty nice. It sucks that he has a hard time ajusting to playing for NFL. I really would love to see him do well any where on any team, Hopefully hes able to fix up stuff before September so he can possibly get back in to the swing of things.

Re: Ricky Williams Fails Marijuana Test Again

Ricky needs to come back to the CFL because as far as I know they don't test for anything. He can smoke all the weed he wants, live relatively out of the media spotlight, and still play football. He won't make the money he'd make in the NFL but I think it's safe to say that the window is all but closed for that anyway.

If they don't enforce it, I don't guess it matter much does it.

Players in the NFL represent the NFL. Not only that, kids look up to these players and consider some of them as role models. The NFL has made the decision to not let their players break the law and if they find out that they do, they get punished.

If they choose to enforce punishment on one violation more strictly than another that is their own business I guess. I was just pointing out the fact that they cannot let their players go around breaking the law when kids look up to them.

Re: Ricky Williams Fails Marijuana Test Again

I agree with Dak here. Regardless of your feelings on marijuana, the fact remains that smoking weed is a crime, and as such, the NFL should have the right to punish their players for marijuana use, just like how any other company or business should expect their employees to abide by the law and not smoke weed. And, several other business do actually test their employees for drug use.

Re: Ricky Williams Fails Marijuana Test Again

I understand the "breaking the law setting a bad precedent" argument, but look at a few examples of the inane discretion used by the NFL:

Jared Allen is arrested/charged with DUI three times in four years. The NFL does nothing about it the first two times, then comes down "hard" the third time: 4-game suspension.

Michael Pittman is charged twice in one year and put on probation for beating his wife: 1-game suspension. A few years later, he's charged again for the same crime: 3-game suspension.

Jamal Lewis is charged with attempting to distribute cocaine, and accepts a plea-bargain to serve four months in prison instead of ten years: 2-game suspension.

In an on-field incident, 330-pound Albert Haynesworth stomps a metal cleat into the head of Andre Gurode: 5-game suspension.

Leonard Little is charged with DUI and manslaughter and thrown in jail after KILLING A MAN: 8-game suspension. A few years later, he's arrested for DUI again: no suspension.

Aaaaaaand:

Ricky Williams, clinically diagnosed with social anxiety disorder (which is often treated with marijuana), tests positive for pot twice: 4-game suspension. He tests positive again: ENTIRE YEAR'S SUSPENSION.

Get your friggin' priorities straight.

You make a good point.

But my point is that Ricky Williams knows that smoking marijuana is against the rules and against the law and after he was caught once, he should know they would be testing him in the future. He had the choice to quit smoking marijuana or play in the NFL.

He chose marijuana.

Re: Ricky Williams Fails Marijuana Test Again

those are excellent points Freak. It seems like Gooddell is not content to let player's misbehavior slide....hopefully he starts cracking down on guys who are getting multiple DUIs and things of that nature

He chose marijuana.
Actually, first he chose Paxil, a prescribed medicine that would treat his S.A.D. It didn't work for him, and he went back to pot.

I'm not saying his disorder is the only reason Ricky likes the sticky icky, but it's just one more reason why the NFL looks foolish so severely punishing one of its most low-key superstars, while letting a bunch of other violent thugs play on.
