Barton suspended after training ground scrap

Manchester City have suspended Joey Barton for the rest of the season after the volatile midfielder got involved in a training ground fist-fight with team-mate Ousmane Dabo, who was taken to a hospital with a suspected broken jaw.

24-year-old Barton, who has been involved in acts of indiscipline in the past and recently raised quite a few eyebrows by criticising Three Lions stars, could have well played his last match for Stuart Pearce’s side as the Mirror has reported that the England international’s City career is over.

Everton, who have been interested in Barton for some time, and the promoted Sunderland are likely to trigger a £5.5million release clause in his contract.

Meanwhile, Barton's agent Willie McKay, referring to the scuffle, said: "He (Barton) was defending himself - but because it is Joey it makes headlines."

A City source described the scene, saying: "It was incredible. Joey was over Dabo and still hitting him while he was on the floor."

Barton's a fine player, but he seems to want a route out of City and one in which it will look as though he's being victimised against as opposed to just having the balls to come out and say he wants out.

Personally, although he's a good player, if I were boss of a top Prem side he still wouldn't interest me. Way too much "baggage" and too self opinionated without having so much quality that I would excuse those traits.

I'm unsure if i'd like a player like Barton at Sunderland.

Yes he is an exceptional talent but whats to say this won't happen again after a year or so at another club?


Maybe he needs a manager to crack the whip and get him sorted out and control him.

Roy Keane is possibly the man to sort him out. If he pulled a stunt like that at Sunderland I'm sure Keane would give him a hiding.

For the sake of the team and if the player is worth it, Fergie will stand for anything from his players....from Keane stamping down on the chest of Gareth Southgate in an FA Cup Semi, to a full on 21 man brawl against Arsenal at Old Trafford to Cantona attacking supporters in the crowd.

Manchester City midfielder Joey Barton has been arrested by police investigating an alleged training ground assault on a team-mate.
Greater Manchester Police said the 24-year-old was questioned on suspicion of assault.

Ousmane Dabo claims he was attacked during a training session at City's Carrington training ground on 1 May.

A police spokesman said Joey Barton had been bailed until 11 July pending further inquiries.
