Rep Power: 0 | Phillies' Howard Wins Home Run Derby Quote:
David Wright provided the early fireworks at Major League Baseball's Home Run Derby, but Ryan Howard wound up the big winner.

Howard, the Philadelphia Phillies' six-foot-four, 252-pound first baseman, clubbed five home runs in the final round Monday in Pittsburgh to defeat New York Mets third baseman David Wright, who hit four.
Howard's winning homer smacked off a "Hit It Here" sign above the right-field stands, giving a lucky fan 500 free round-trip air tickets.
"That'll give the fans in Philly something to cheer about," said the 2005 National League rookie of the year.
Howard has 28 home runs this season and will make his first all-star game appearance on Tuesday.
Wright thrilled the crowd by crushing 16 home runs in his first trip to the plate — the third-highest total ever for a single round. But the effort seemed to exhaust the 23-year-old, as he managed only six homers over the final two rounds.
"Once you get past that first round you want to win, so it's a little disappointing," Wright said.
Toronto Blue Jays third baseman Troy Glaus struggled for the second time in the derby, finishing last with just one home run.
The right-handed slugger, who has 23 homers this year, wrapped one just inside the left-field foul pole early in his trip to the plate, but couldn't put another one over the wall in his last nine swings. Glaus's final attempt had the necessary distance but sailed just outside the pole.
The performance was at least an improvement over Glaus's other Home Run Derby appearance in 2001, when he represented the Anaheim Angels. Though he belted 41 round-trippers that year, Glaus was shut out in the derby in Seattle.
| Well I guess this would happen if he got in the finals againest anyone beside Big Papi but David Wright just didnt have anymore energy to hit anymore becuase like he said it was a rookie mistake to put all his enegry in the first round. He also said in future ones he will save it for the last round so he can win. But we have all figured out that Big Papi is not fit for these type of events and will never be becuase of the way he hits the ball. |
