TORONTO -- Toronto Blue Jays right fielder Alex Rios was released Friday from a Toronto hospital a week after being admitted for treatment of a staph infection in his left leg.
Rios fouled a ball off his leg on June 27 in a 6-0 victory over the Washington Nationals and the area swelled. He sat out the next day but the pain worsened and he was hospitalized the day after. He was placed on the disabled list retroactive to June 28.
Blue Jays GM J.P. Riccardi told the Toronto Sun he hopes to have Rios back during the team's 10-game homestand after the All-Star break.
"The infection isn't completely gone because he's still taking medication orally but he's out of the danger area now," Riccardi told the Sun.
Rios, 25, has been having a breakout season, batting .330 with 15 homers and 53 RBI. He also has 20 doubles, nine stolen bases and a .383 on-base percentage.
