Pete Rose finally comes clean

It was a somewhat stunning admission given that Rose spent nearly 15 years denying he'd ever bet on baseball. Only in 2004 did Rose acknowledge in his most recent autobiography that he made baseball wagers while managing the Reds. If reinstated, the 65-year-old Rose said he would like to again manage in the majors.

The career hits leader also said he supported Barry Bonds and Mark McGwire, who fell far short in his first time on the Hall of Fame ballot.
"Don't penalize McGwire because you think other guys are taking steroids," Rose said.

Rose finished his career in 1986 with 4,256 lifetime hits. He was managing the Reds in 1989 when he agreed to a lifetime ban after an investigation of his gambling.

The new Rose exhibit at Great American Ball Park includes more than 300 items and will be up for nearly a year. Major League Baseball had to give permission for the display.

"When you're in my position, you're happy with anything," Rose said.
Rose also said during the interview that he's no longer concerned about whether he'll ever be reinstated or if he'll ever be admitted into the Hall of Fame.
"I quit worrying about it," Rose said.

It's about time. I personally can't stand this guy. I think he is an absolute scumbag.

I don't care how awesome you were as a player. He may have more hits than anyone else in the history of baseball, but the second you bet on your OWN TEAM that you are managing? Forget it. You could have one 20 straight world series and 20 MVP's and be considered the best ever, but once you take on the intergrity of the game.......well thats just unforgivable.

Why is betting on your own team so bad? I could understand it being really bad if he was betting against the Reds, because that would insinuate he was throwing the games or something, but betting on your own team wouldn't change the outcome of the game. I don't know, maybe I'm missing the bigger picture here.

This was never really a big deal to me and I think it is ridiculous to ban somebody from MBL for life for that.

I'm with half boy, I never saw the problem...bc wouldn't this make him try to manage a smarter game try harder to win...so doesn't this help his team ...I'm confused

Completley agree, its notlike he was throwing games. He believed he had a good team and he bet on them, there was no fix or anything. He should have definitly been allowed in the hall of fame. Bae Ruth would show up drunk and fight people to include fans but we are taught that he is the shit. This guys bets a few games and get the boot? Retarded.

I am BAFFLED that you guys support Pete Rose. Honestly............ Where is the logical Tom Dogg when I need his support. If Tom Dogg is behind this then maybe its me that's wrong......

Have you guys EVER heard the expression. "The baseball season is a marathon and not a sprint"?

Simply put....... Its the 7th inning Reds-Pirates are tied 3-3. Pete has no faith in his bullpen. Pete leaves the starter in too long because he has 10,000 bucks on the game. Starter pulls a groin muscle. Pete leaves him in. Pete really needs this game. Starter blows out groin. Out 3 months.

Example 2.

Reds are down 6-2 in the 8th inning of a first game of a double header. Pete has 20 grand on the game. Pete uses all his starters and doesnt give them a break. Players almost come back but lose 6-5 in the 9th.

2nd game of double header. Pete needs his money back and puts 40 grand on the late game. Pete plays all his best players again even though they just played 3 hours.

Overall the team suffers terribly over a 162 game season.

The thought that it would be ok for him to bet on his own team or any other team is absolutely absurd to me as a sports fan.

Freaking bet on horses, or at casinos. Not on the one game that employs you.

Any GOOD manager realizes that

I don't agree with his ban too. If he was putting in third stringers and betting on his team losing, that's a different story. Come on, this guy was one of the best ball players in history, he should be in the Hall of Fame.

What a minute, I don't even give a shit about baseball. Too slow and boring.
