| The Met's preview for the 2007 season. Okay here's my Mets preview for 2007: Starting Pitching and the Bullpen: First things first, we need to get some stronger pitching. I mean, with Omar and the club wanting a World Series title, you need to get some starters who are veterans. I don't see the Mets doing much with 2 rookies in the back of the rotation. They’re not bad, but can’t be trusted in a big game even though past games tell me different. Perez had one solid game in the playoffs and the rest were awful, but he's done well in the regular season, at times and is a former 15 game winner, so I guess if he stays healthy and all, he could be something special for the Mets and a huge back starter. Also, John Maine's main concern is to stay healthy and to make sure the walks don’t kill him. The Mets need him to pitch much more then five innings per start like last year, he’s a key pitcher this season if you can believe it. The front three, Pedro, Tom, and Orlando are solid but it would have helped each man out if the Mets had made a huge pitching pick-up this off-season. Oh, and let's not forget Chan Ho Park who will be pitching in and out for Pedro this season, but I don't count on him having much impact because he’s awful and hasn’t had much success in years. So, picking up a starter either at the All-Star break or some time before would be key and help the Mets in the late months of the season and into the playoffs. Unlike past seasons, the Mets have a very strong bullpen this season which is rather good because with the starting rotation being on the softer side, the starters get to the 7th or 6th and game is basically over. With Sanchez, Mota and Wagner, there shouldn't be much blown games by the bullpen like there has past season. I'm happy to see that we can finally say we have a bullpen that could get us threw the season and playoffs. Batting order and offense: Secondly, the Mets offense looks really good right now with David Wright, Carlos Beltran, Carlos Delgado, Jose Reyes, Paul Lo Duca and company. Not much changing from last season besides adding a new bat in Alou and an order change. But, people are jumping all over the place and saying the Mets will have a awesome offensive season and such, but with the regular season not even starting, I don't understand why people are assuming that. It needs to stay very healthy and have success against lefties, which was a problem last season. To stay on top and have another great season, I believe the same guys will need to step up this season and have guys like Alou who is under estimated and guy who aren’t the biggest stars on the team. For example, guys like Jose Valentin, Shawn Green, and another productive season from Lo Duca would be awesome. With these men having average seasons it’ll help the rest of the line-up and hopefully help the Mets to win some more key games in the regular season. And, with such a surprise last year in Valentin having such a break out season, I hope we see someone do the same thing and shock everyone. Defense: Third, the Mets will need to play a good defense and not let a repeat of what happened two years ago when they placed second to last in defense. They need a defensive season like last year and better because with young pitching for the first half of the season and still second half, they'll need boost it up so they don't lose games because of it. The division is not weak this year like it was last and one or two wins could go along way. I'd assume Jose Reyes and David Wright will do much better after decent defensive seasons last year and I'm sure you'll see great performances from Delgado and Valentin like usual. The outfield looks great with Lastings, Carlos and Shawn, I see quite a bit of outfield assist sense all men have awesome arms and with keeping the ball from not touching the wall should be easy because all men play a good outfield and have speed. I'm just hoping Lastings has improved fielding wise from last season and if he has, you can bet this year the Mets defense shall be like no other and exciting to watch. The Bench: The Mets must have the best bench in the major leagues. I mean, look at it...Lastings Milledge, Endy Chavez, Ramon Castro, Julio Franco and much more. It looks as if the Mets can have one of those games where they play most of their reserves and still win because they are that good. Each name that I named would probably be starting on another ball club depending on who was in front of him but most likely they would. Like usual, I see some clutch hits from the bench this season and the Mets leading the NL in pinch-hitting. Here's a look at the Mets starting line-up, which should be the opening day line-up: Catcher - Paul Lo Duca (R) First Base - Carlos Delgado (L) Second Base - Jose Valentin (S) Third Base - David Wright (R) Shortstop - Jose Reyes (S) Left Field - Moises Alou (R) Center Field - Carlos Beltran (S) Right Field - Shawn Green (L) Here's the starting rotation and bullpen: Starting Rotation: Tom Glavine (L) Orlando Hernandez (R) John Maine (R) Oliver Perez (L) Chan Ho Park (R) Bullepn: Pedro Feliciano (L) Aaron Heilman (R) Guillermo Mota (R) Duaner Sanchez (R) Scott Schoeneweis (L) Jorge Sosa (R) Billy Wagner (L) Let's hope a shaky starting rotation can survive until Pedro comes back and let's hope for once the bullpen can pick up the starting rotation and lead us to some success. And, I'm hoping we see the offensive line-up do what’s expected and those hit the crap out of the ball and win us some games. The Mets season has many question marks in it, but I believe if they can play some serious small ball and play as a team, they will be a tough team to beat in the regular season regardless of a weak rotation or injures. But, the playoffs are a much different story and for another time. Let's go Mets! Last edited by Killswitch; 02-27-2007 at 10:32 PM. | ||||||||||||||

| Re: The Met's preview for the 2007 season. Looks pretty good, but one thing I wanted to comment on is the bullpen. The Mets had the best bullpen ERA in the NL last year, so it's not like a better bullpen will make much of a difference from last year. In fact, their bullpen might be worse, since they lost Bradford and Sanchez had that freak shoulder injury | |||||||||||||||

Scott Schoeneweis, Pedro Feliciano, and some others will have to step it up until he comes back because I believe he's a key role in this years bullpen. | ||||||||||||||||

| Re: The Met's preview for the 2007 season. The Mets line up for the season looks good. The pitching is good, but not as good without Pedro. Sucks he's out. He's one of my favorite pitcher's. | |||||||||||||||

| Re: The Met's preview for the 2007 season. One other thing I disagree with is the comments about the starting pitching. First off, there's only one "rookie" at the back end of the rotation (Maine). Perez has been in the majors since 2002 and has 111 career starts. In addition, the 2006 Tigers and 2003 Marlins are examples of how far a team can go with young starting pitching. Especially the Marlins, who started 21 year old Dontrelle Willis, 23 year old Josh Beckett and 25 year old Bred Penny. Plus, Carl Pavano was only 27, still pretty young. | |||||||||||||||
