Marlins star Cabrera cashes in

Florida's Miguel Cabrera has been awarded $7.4m in arbitration for 2007 - the third-highest ever amount.



His deal trails only the $8.2m received by Atlanta's Andruw Jones in 2001 and the $10m Alfonso Soriano earned with Washington last year.

All-Star third baseman Cabrera, 23, was second in the National League in 2006 with a .339 batting average and set a franchise record with 50 doubles.

He also added 26 homers and 114 RBI while earning $472,000 last season.

Marlins general manager Larry Beinfest told MLB.com: "We were unable to negotiate a settlement with Miguel.

"We filed a number and they filed a number, and they were both very large numbers for a great player.

"The arbitrators decided in his way - we had budgeted either for a loss or a win. We respect the (arbitration) process and will welcome him into camp."
