Philadelphia star Chase Utley has signed a seven-year $85m contract extension with the Phillies.

The 28-year-old's new deal will keep him in Philadelphia until the 2013 season and avoided salary arbitration.

Phillies assistant GM Ruben Amaro Jr said: "We view Chase as not only a great second baseman but also one of the top 10 to 15 players in the game."

Utley had a 35-game hitting streak in 2006, the longest in the majors and the second-longest in franchise history.

He has developed into one of the major league's premier power-hitting second basemen, hitting 32 home runs and driving in 102 runs.

Yeah, I think Utley is seriously underrated. I love snagging him for my fantasy team in late rounds.

Utley is underrated and is a very good player, but I don't know if he's worth 85 million dollars over 7 years for...And even on Utley's side of things if he wasn't in it for the money, wouldn't another team be much more appropriate where he'd have a shot at a ring?

Not a bad sign though...

He'll never last to the later rounds. We got hiim in the 2nd round last year. A guy who puts up numbers like that at second base is hard to come by.

That's true, he was a sleeper pick a few years ago, but now he's a second to third rounder....
