Breaking News!!!

Bill Parcells retired from coaching Monday, leaving the Dallas Cowboys after four seasons and ending a stellar career that featured three Super Bowl appearances and two championships.

Say what?
Is Bill Parcells really retiring? He's said he was finished before, only to return:

May 15, 1991: Bill Parcells announces his retirement as Giants head coach after eight years. When asked if he could possibly coach another team someday, he said "I'm not dying."

Jan. 31, 1996: Parcells delivered a letter to Patriots owner Robert Kraft that said he had "no desire to continue as an NFL coach" or have other comparable positions for the 1997 season. He signed with the Jets just eight days later, with the Patriots' permission.

Jan. 2, 2000: Parcells resigned after three seasons as coach of the New York Jets. Parcells said he could no longer devote the amount of time needed to be a coach. ''I've coached my last game,'' said Parcells, ending rumors he might seek another job. When pushed on the subject, Parcells firmly reiterated, "... My intention is to stay retired as a coach.''

-- ESPN Research

The decision came 15 days after the Cowboys' season ended with a heartbreaking playoff loss in Seattle. He'd been at his office nearly every day since, and there were other indications that the 65-year-old coach was returning for a fifth year in Dallas and 20th as an NFL head coach.

Instead, Parcells released a statement saying: "I am retiring from coaching football.''

"I want to thank Jerry Jones and Stephen Jones for their tremendous support over the last four years,'' the statement continued. "Also, the players, my coaching staff and others in the support group who have done so much to help. Dallas is a great city and the Cowboys are an integral part of it. I am hopeful that they are able to go forward from here.''

Parcells has done so much for the Cowboys. He has retired countles times in the past so look to see him again. As he is only on his 20th year coaching. He turned the team around. His shoes will be very hard to fill, but I'm sure the next coach may be able to it. I find it funny that the Cowboys are hell bent on trying to get Sean Peyton to come coach for them. Which God knows is not going to happen. Especially after the great year the Saints had.

This shocked me, I really thought he would come back for one last year and then retire, but he had a good career and was ready to call it quits...

Profootballtalk.com reports league sources say the "early scuttlebutt" regarding the Cowboys' search to replace Bill Parcells is focused on Wade Phillips and Patriots head coach Bill Belichick.

PFT "wouldn't be surprised in the least" to hear that Jerry Jones is after Belichick, while Phillips is a clear possibility at this point. Jones will reportedly be after a big name in his quest to replace the Tuna.
I don't see Belichick leaving the Pats, IMO there best shot is Bob Stoops or Wade Philliphs...

Thoughts?

That's too bad. I really thought Parcells should have come back for one more year. This team is only a defensive end and a safety away from competing for the championship.

Wow the tuna really leaving the sport. Second shocker this year, Tiki being the first to call it quits being only 30 years old and in his prime as a Rb.

Parcell's will come back, I have a feeling he will, he's said it once that hes done and he came back, so I'm sure he will be back for the 2008 season, but as the Giants Head Coach after they fire Tom.

Thoughts?

I think dallas needs to go for an offensive minded coach, there is no reason that we should have had a better offense in '05 than '06. with all the weapons we have, we should have been one of the best in the league. granted we lost sean payton as the coordinator, but we need someone who can utilize all the talent we have. i think Jim mora would have been nice, but its too late for him. my dream would be to have jimmy johnson back, I'm serious.

Parcells if he does for some reason elect to come back wouldn't be for 3-4 years as after his previous retirements he has never came back before allowing three seasons to pass...At that time he'll be 68, most likely 69...I really thing this is the last time...
