KIRKLAND, Wash. (Jan. 18, 2007) -- Seattle Seahawks quarterback Matt Hasselbeck had surgery to repair torn cartilage in his non-throwing shoulder, and the team expects him to be fully recovered by training camp.
The Seahawks said the surgery to repair a 3-year-old torn labrum in his left shoulder "went well" and that last season's Super Bowl and Pro Bowl passer "should be ready for training camp at worst, if not before" July.
Noted specialist Dr. James Andrews performed the surgery in Birmingham, Ala., after Hasselbeck sought a second opinion following Seahawks doctors advising surgery. Hasselbeck first injured the shoulder during a Jan. 4, 2004, playoff loss at Green Bay.
Hasselbeck will likely miss most of the team's minicamps and will not be able to develop needed rapport with receiver Deion Branch. Both the quarterback and the former Super Bowl MVP receiver, acquired in September from New England, talked earlier this week about how this offseason would be important to better learn what to expect from each other on pass routes.
The 31-year-old Hasselbeck played through the shoulder pain, following a sprained right knee and two broken bones in his left hand, until Seattle's season ended Jan. 14 with a loss at Chicago in the NFC divisional playoffs. Hasselbeck completed only 56.6 percent of his passes this season, his lowest rate since 2001, his first year with the Seahawks. He was intercepted 18 times in 12 regular-season and two postseason starts -- his most over a full season in his eight-year career.
"This was kind of a tough year," Hasselbeck said Jan. 15, while cleaning out his locker.
Now? Hasselbeck said he's going to get away and "get healthy."
He said the broken fingers in his left hand were non-displaced fractures and are "totally fine" and that the knee feels "totally good."
"I have another place I can go. I'm planning on going there," he said. "If I can get the kids out of school, we're out.
"This year more than other years, as much as we wanted the season to go on, it's been a long year. It just seems like we've been here a long time. Getting away isn't all bad right now."

Hasselbeck had a real tough year and definitely one of his off years, hopefully the surgery will go well and he can recover from it and be back to his original form next year..
