Padres hoping for answer by end of week
SAN DIEGO -- David Wells has an offer to pitch this season for the San Diego Padres. And the team wants an answer.
Padres general manager Kevin Towers told the San Diego Union-Tribune that the team would like a decision from 43-year-old Wells -- who indicated at the end of last season that he would retire -- by the end of this week.
"From everything I gather, David wants to pitch for us," Towers told the Union-Tribune. "We've made him a contract proposal. All that remains is the answer.
"Time is important. Spring training is less than a month away (pitchers and catchers report Feb. 14). If he doesn't want to sign with us, we need to pursue our other options."
Wells is technically a free agent who can sign with any team. Toronto is also reportedly interested, but the Padres are clearly in the driver's seat.
Wells was 1-2 for the Padres last season in the month of September. He was 3-5 with a 4.42 ERA overall with San Diego and Boston, which traded him on Aug. 31.
