Wembley gets nod to host NFL game

Wembley gets nod to host NFL game

London will this autumn host the first regular season NFL game to be played outside North America.

The BBC understands the match will be played at the new Wembley stadium, and that it will be a home game for Miami Dolphins against the New York Giants.

The mayor of London, Ken Livingstone, was instrumental in bringing the match to the capital - London beat four German cities to the prize.

Wembley has fought off opposition from Twickenham to stage the match.

The game is part of an attempt by the NFL to raise its profile outside America.

The UK is no longer represented in European offshoot, NFL Europe, following the demise of the Scottish Claymores in October 2004.

By contrast, Germany is home to five of the league's six current teams.

Mexico City's Aztec Stadium hosted the only regular season game to be staged outside of the US to date in October 2005, when 103,457 fans saw Arizona beat San Francisco.

This will be interesting to see how attendance does over there with the bigger name players and teams....London was a good choice to do the first international game and I believe it will fare pretty nicely...

Except it's not. Arizona and San Francisco played in Mexico City last year. They packed Aztec Stadium with 100,000+.

And the NFL always plays a preseason game in Mexico City or Tokyo and they always sellout.

This is the first game outside of North America, seeing how Mexico is in North America it doesnt matter

and Tokyo is different than England, Tokyo likes to follow popular american culture nfl being one of them while England...england prefers its style of futball to say the least
