| 2007 NHL All-Star Celebration commences in Dallas with All-Star Saturday NEW YORK – The National Hockey League (NHL) will treat residents of and visitors to the Dallas/Fort Worth area to the excitement of the 2007 NHL All-Star Celebration with a series of hockey and entertainment events on Saturday, Jan. 20 at the All-Star Plaza, located on the North Plaza of the American Airlines Center. All-Star Saturday will feature a fun-filled day of free entertainment, one-of-a-kind food, hockey-themed attractions, celebrity guests and charitable events to benefit the community. The day’s events will begin with the NHL All-Star Race and Roll, a charity 5K run/walk and 10K inline skate through the streets of downtown Dallas to benefit the Dallas Stars Foundation. The 10K Pagasus Flyers Masters Inline Race, the first of its kind in Dallas, will consist of four and one half loops around the AAC, with the “Masters” athletes reaching speeds in excess of 30 mph. This exciting action-filled spectator-friendly race will give fans the opportunity to watch competition among some of the most skilled inline skaters in the country. Following the NHL All-Star Race and Roll, the Leary Firefighters Foundation and local Dallas firefighters will be on-site throughout the day to offer public tours of The Firefighter Safe House and Dallas Fire Rescue trucks. A number of charitable initiatives will take place, with proceeds benefiting the Leary Firefighters Foundation to support the “Fitness for Firefighters Campaign” of the Dallas Fire-Rescue Department as well as the Foundation’s rebuilding efforts in the Gulf Coast region. The Leary Firefighters Foundation, founded in 2000 by actor Denis Leary, was established to keep the needs of firefighters in the forefront of the country's awareness and to provide funding and resources to acquire the tools necessary to maintain the highest level of public safety. The Leary Firefighters Celebrity All-Star Team will face off against local Dallas Fire Department Celebrities in a Celebrity Street Hockey Game at 12:30 p.m. Several of Leary’s castmates from the FX Network drama “Rescue Me,” including Callie Thorne and Andrea Roth, will be on-hand. Other celebrity players include Canadian-born actor, Taylor Kitsch, star of the NBC series “Friday Night Lights.” For hungry hockey fans, there will be several food attractions to keep taste buds satisfied. Acclaimed pastry chef Bronwen Webber will create an edible Stanley Cup® cake that will be presented to the winner of the Celebrity Street Hockey Game. Gianni Santin, executive pastry chef of Hotel Crescent Court, will make a chocolate replica Stanley Cup®. Chefs John Tesar of the Mansion at Turtle Creek and Tim Love, from the Lonesome Dove, will be among the local chefs competing in an NHL All-Star Cook-Off featuring Dallas firefighters, at which actor Wade Williams, star of the Fox television series “Prison Break,” will serve as a celebrity judge. For a $5 donation that benefits the Leary Firefighters Foundation, fans can taste and determine for themselves the best All-Star firehouse chili in Texas as local firehouses serve samples of their special homemade chili while they compete for bragging rights in the All-Star Saturday Chili Contest. All-Star Saturday would not be complete without the chance to participate in and experience the game of hockey. Fans will be able to test the speed of their slap shot, step into goal and face a rapid fire of pucks, take a power breakaway shot and watch others compete in SuperSkills competitions. Fans also will have a chance to meet NHL Alumni. The 2007 NHL All-Star Celebration hosted at American Airlines Center in Dallas will feature live national broadcasts of the NHL YoungStars Game presented by Upper Deck and Dodge Nitro/NHL SuperSkills on Tuesday, Jan. 23 and the NHL All-Star Game on Wednesday, Jan. 24 on VERSUS in the United States and CBC and RDS in Canada starting at 8 p.m., ET. | An All-Star game for a sport few Americans care about in the first place, on a network very few people get, aired midweek, and opposite the uber-popular American Idol no less. Yeah, you gotta love the NHL's thinking here. This league seriously needs to fire whoever it was negotiated the most recent TV contract. Taking less money to stay with ESPN would've been a much better move in the long run. | ||||||||||||||
