Melbourne midfielder Kristian Sarkies has hit top form at the right end of the season, but the talented 20-year-old knows he has a tough road ahead of him to cement his place in a Victory outfit bulging with talent.
Sarkies, who has made just six starts this season, scored a brace in Melbourne's 2-2 come-from-behind draw with Perth on Sunday.
Although his first goal in the Hyundai A-League was less than memorable - a simple tap-in - his second more than made up for it.
With the Victory down to 10 men, Sarkies nailed a spectacular 25-yard free-kick past the Glory wall and into the bottom left hand corner of the goal to secure the draw for the visitors.
Sarkies, who almost notched a hat-trick late in the game at another dead-ball situation, said he was pleased with his performance, but quickly turned his focus to the challenge that awaited him in the coming weeks - earning a regular place in Melbourne's starting XI.
"It's only one game. If it was like that all season it would be a different story, but I've got to work on this now and hopefully keep it up," Sarkies said.
"It obviously boosts your confidence scoring two goals but at the same time it's back to square one, you've got to do the basics, keep working at it and work towards next week against Queensland at home."
"Obviously when you're not playing it's frustrating, but that's when you've got to do the extra stuff. Train extra hard and try to impress the coach and work your way into the team."
When asked if he envisaged his first goal in the Hyundai A-League being a simple tap-in, Sarkies joked: "I expected to get a goal from the half-way line that goes into the top corner, but that wasn't the case."
Melbourne coach Ernie Merrick heaped praise on the attacking midfielder, labeling him as a star in the making.
"I've been coaching Kristian for about seven years and I know what he's capable of," Merrick said.
"He's certainly been showing it at training and he's been showing it in flashes this year. He was terrific last year and I think Kristian is a big name for the future. His free kick was sensational and he nearly scored on his second free kick."
