Twins sign troubled Ponson

MINNEAPOLIS (AP) -- Sidney Ponson and the Minnesota Twins agreed Wednesday to a minor league contract, a deal that could be worth as much as $3 million.

Ponson would get a $1 million, one-year contract if added to the 40-man roster and would have the chance to earn $2 million more in performance bonuses.

Minnesota has only three set starting pitchers heading into spring training: AL Cy Young Award winner Johan Santana, Carlos Silva and Boof Bonser.

Ponson won 17 games in 2003 with Baltimore and San Francisco, but his career has been set back by alcohol and weight problems.

He was the opening-day starter for the Orioles in 2004 but his contract was terminated by his original organization in September 2005, a week after his second arrest that year for drunken driving.

Ponson went to an alcohol rehabilitation facility and regularly saw a psychiatrist. He was 4-4 with a 5.24 ERA in 13 starts and one relief appearance for the Cardinals last year, then was cut July 7. He signed with the Yankees a week later but went 0-1 with a 10.47 ERA in three starts and two relief appearances was cut Aug. 19.

A 30-year-old right-hander, Ponson is 80-96 with a 4.89 ERA in 238 career starts and 14 relief appearances.

Minnesota also agreed to a minor league contract with right-hander Brad Voyles, who finished last season with the St. Louis organization. Voyles appeared in parts of three seasons with the Kansas City Royals, from 2001-03
I'd be surprised if he didn't make the majors for them and become their 5th starter, hopefully he can pan out and do well for the Twins, because with Lirano gone, the Twins are going to need him to do pretty decent. I just hope he has his problems behind him and can get on without drug or alcohol problems....If it doesn't it's only a minor league deal....

Thoughts?

Rick Anderson should be able to get some run out of him. I think the rotation next year is:

Santana
Bonser
Silva
Garza/Perkins
Ponson

Well, I understand his production is nothing more than a 5 starter at best, but, it's nice to know that it's a minor league contract. He won't take time away from the young guys, as Santana/Bonser/Garza look to be in the rotation with Ponson, and possibly someone like Baker. I really like the rotation for 2007, even without Liriano. All I know is, I can not wait to see a Santana, sophmore Garza, Bonser, and Liriano back from injury type of rotation.

Like said, chances are, he's done and washed up. But, you just never know. Considering this is a Minor League deal, they have the flexibility to not feel pressure to put him on the 25 man roster come opening day if he does horrible during ST. Either way, I'm thinking he makes around 10 starts this season.

For Ponson's sake, I hope he can turn his life around starting now and have a pretty good season, I don't see him starting all the season, but may 15 starts....I'm guessing and hoping he can at least have a 7 game season and maybe do 7-4, 7-5....but time will only tell...

Yeah he'll be around 15 starts but nothing more due to he's been unsuccessful over the past few years and I don't see him lasting. No doubt he'll be under a 500 record becuase the Twins have a rough shedule and he won't be able to catch up. I see his season being a let down and not heading anywhere beside being realesed.

Yea true, I don't think he'll do that good, but as I said for his sake I hope he can do decent....he want be in the Majors that long unless some type of miracle hits him and he can throw consisten 98-100 mph fastballs, which I highly doubt will ever happen....expect him in the minors quite often, if he has a bad year and they decide to keep him for some reason...
