Former Red Sox closer Foulke to sign with Indians?

Foulke, 34, received multi-year offers, according to a source, but he is expected to sign a one-year contract with the Indians, possibly with a player or mutual option.

His agent, Dan Horwits, has informed other interested clubs that Foulke is close to a deal, and that they should pursue other options.

Foulke would be the fourth free-agent reliever signed by the Indians this off-season, joining right-handers Joe Borowski and Roberto Hernandez and left-hander Aaron Fultz.

Both Foulke and Borowski have significant experience as closers, but Foulke likely would be the leading candidate to pitch the ninth inning. When the Indians signed Borowski, they did not promise him the closer's role.

Foulke, however, has battled injuries the past two seasons, and has not closed regularly since helping lead the Red Sox to the World Series title in 2004. The Indians likely would wait to see how both Foulke and Borowski performed in spring training before deciding between the two.

Rookie Jonathan Papelbon replaced Foulke as the Red Sox's closer last season. Foulke went on the disabled list with right elbow tendonitis on June 12 and missed more than two months. After returning, he posted a 2.04 ERA in his final 15 appearances.

Ken Rosenthal is FOXSports.com's senior baseball writer.
This could be a good sign for the Indians he did well after he returned and before he got hurt and he could put up a good shot at being the closer with Borowoski being the set up man, the Indians have done an incredible job at fixing their bullpen that blew over 25 games last season, they should be a much better and more complete team than the team and bullpen they had last year...

Thoughts?

I believe Keith Foulke has no arm left. It showed last season when he couldn't manage what he used to do with ease. It was smart we saw the Red Sox let him go sense he had no more value. With an arm like his, his only chance is being a reliever in the NL, nothing more. I would hate to see the Indians waste money.

yea that was before the surgery, that's why he was out the whole year trying to get it fixed, once he came back he did real good though, as it said in 15 appearences he had a 2.04 era and that's great for a reliever...

well since a 24 hour period has been passed I am allowed to post again in this thread, so just a bit of an update on Foulke & the Indians....

The deal is contingent on Foulke's physical exam - which he is yet to take - and the Indians determining the amount of risk and dollars they're willing to invest in him. Foulke, 34, had knee, right el bow and back problems the last two sea sons with Boston.

"We've had a lot of posi tive and con structive dia logue with Keith's agent," said Indians General Manager Mark Shapiro. "But we still have a lot of ground to cover."

Foulke would be the fourth veteran reliever Shapiro has signed this off-season in an effort to repair one of the worst bullpens in the big leagues. Joe Borowski, Roberto Hernandez and Aaron Fultz all signed one-year deals.

If Foulke signs, he'd compete with Borowski in spring training for the closer job. In one form or another, Foulke and Borowski would own the eighth and ninth innings. One may be the primary closer, but based on their recent medical history, the other would also get a chance to close.

It's doubtful either one could close three days in a row.

Borowski failed a physical before the winter meetings with the Phillies because of the questionable health of his right shoulder. The Phillies wanted to sign him to a two-year deal. The Indians signed him to a one-year, $4 million deal with a club option for 2008.

Foulke's last big year was 2004 when he saved 32 games for the Red Sox. Borowski saved 36 last season for Florida.

Last year, the Indians had the fewest saves in the big leagues with 24. Borowski, Hernandez, Fultz and Foulke have a combined 599 saves. Hernandez, 42, has 326, but is no longer considered an everyday closer.

Foulke, who made $7.5 million last season, seemed to end the season healthy. He did not give up a run in September, pitching 11 1/3 scoreless innings in 11 appearances.

"Keith says he feels better now than he did before the 2004 season," said his agent Dan Horwits.

Shapiro is waiting to hear from Greg Clifton, agent for Mark Mulder. The injured left-hander should be close to making a decision on which team he'll sign with. It's believed the Indians have offered Mulder, who has a career record of 103-57, a two-year deal. He's recovering from surgery on his left shoulder and probably won't be able to make more than 25 starts this season.

Arizona, Texas, St. Louis and San Diego are also interested in Mulder. The Indians are using their good reputation for rehabbing pitchers and sending them on their way to bigger and better things in negotiations. If they signed Mulder, and he returned to past form, it would allow Shapiro to consider trading a starting pitcher.

Jake Westbrook is eligible for free agency after the 2007 season, but the Indians may approach him about a new deal before opening day.
I still think it will help the bullpen as he did very well after coming back from surgery last year, talking to Jake Westbrook about an extension would be great if he listens this time....

This is nuts. Foulke is washed up and it'll show once he has to go a full season being used day in a day out. His arm won't last more than a month. If he does sign it's not bad on his part sense he'll be earning money but I do think it's a bad sign by the Indians.

He won't be going day in and day out, there is talk of him, Hernandez, and Borowaski changing every once in a while....and he's not that washed up, look at his stats from when he came back...

Not bad money considering he was suppose to get 7.5 from the Red Sox, I still am glad they are giving him a chance, if it doesn't work out too bad, we only will sign him for that year, if he does work out, we got an option on him...

Foulke signs with Indians, getting chance to close

CLEVELAND -- Keith Foulke wants to be a closer again. The Cleveland Indians will give him the chance.

The free agent reliever finalized a $5 million, one-year contract with the club Thursday, a deal both sides hope turns into a longer partnership.

"Keith was looking to close," his agent Dan Horwits said. "He had a few other opportunities but he liked what Cleveland had to offer. He's excited."

Foulke's deal includes about $2 million in performance bonuses and a mutual option for 2008.

Bothered by assorted injuries the past two seasons in Boston, Foulke lost his closer's job last year when the Red Sox decided to go with rookie Jonathan Papelbon. Foulke went 3-1 with a 4.35 ERA but no saves in 44 games and missed two months with elbow tendinitis.

However, the 34-year-old made 11 straight appearances in September without giving up a run, a stretch that encouraged the Indians to take a long look at him as an option to close games in 2007.

Earlier this week, the Indians had Foulke take a physical before finalizing his deal.

He will compete in spring training with Joe Borowski for the club's vacant closer job. Foulke is the fourth veteran reliever signed to one-year deal by Cleveland this winter, joining Borowski, Roberto Hernandez and Aaron Fultz. Only Fultz, a left-handed setup man, lacks closing experience.

The Indians' bullpen had the fewest saves (24) in the majors last season.

"Cleveland pursued Keith for the entire offseason and that meant a lot to him," Horwits said. "The Indians also have a good, experienced team capable of making it to the playoffs and Keith knows once you get there anything can happen."

Two years ago, Foulke helped the Red Sox win their first World Series in 86 years.

After saving 32 games during the regular season, the right-hander went 1-0 in the postseason and was on the mound when Boston completed its four-game sweep of St. Louis to win it all.

Foulke made $7.5 million with the Red Sox last year, but they did not pick up his club option after the season. He rejected a $5.25 million player's option to stay in Boston.

He also has pitched for San Francisco, the Chicago White Sox and Oakland. Foulke was an All-Star in 2003 when he led the AL with 43 saves for the Athletics.

I'm happy he ended up with the Indians. I would have been upset to see him go pitch for the Rangers or some team like that. He season in my eyes is questonable until we see him in action for a good period of time and then I can tell if he is back to his normal self but I do think he'll do alright. Also I'd rather have him than Bob Wicky sense it looks like his arm is starting to drag.
